Mosquitos

Mosquitos - 05/06/2021 10:12 PM

What's the deal on the island with mosquitos? The only downside to our trip so far is the bites my wife receives almost daily. It doesn't matter where she is, inside, outside, at the beach or on the porch, she gets bit. I however do not receive any bites. Ever. Are the mosquitos present everywhere on the island or just near little bay. I know we the swampy water right near the Belair. Does anybody experience this problem in Simpson Bay, Orient Beach. My poor wife gets exasperated and even though she hates it is forced to spray herself with DEET.

Sorry to hear but we do have alot of mosquitos right now , hence please let her spray herself .
I also do it when I have to take a nap outside in our garage lol , because can't go to bed too early and hence can't sleep the rest of the night . Life .

Mitch,

Are you sure they’re mosquitoes? We often have experienced the dreaded little no-see-ums but usually they are in the late afternoon and early evening.

In any event we use the OFF Deep Woods repellent wipes and had virtually no issues with the mosquitoes our entire trip unless we forgot to use them. We had nothing at BSV but it was very breezy although we did have issues a few evenings when we went to dinner but again, I don’t think they were mosquitoes as the bites were more prevalent and even itchier if you can believe it. There is a distinct difference in the appearances of the no-see-em bites from those of the typical moskie bites.

Well to us they look like small mosquitos and we do ''see" them even though they are much smaller than the bird-sized ones we see in Michigan in the summer.

I usually take vitamin B before going to St Maarten all the way through summer until after I get back from fishing in Alaska. Usually don't have a problem with them.

Maybe it's the time of year but we have been going in January for MANY years and I can't ever remember seeing/feeling a mosquito anywhere on Island

Get some Mosquito Milk. You can get it any pharmacy on the island. Best stuff I've ever used.

I always get a new bottle each time we come and bring it back to the states.

Here’s a hint: Tell your wife to refrain from using perfume, cologne and other scented products like body splashes, hairsprays, etc. as the sweet aromas act as an attractant. Also, avoid areas around salt ponds, standing water, dense vegetation or walking along the beach near where the sand meets the vegetation as those areas are prime breeding grounds for mosquitoes and no-see-ums (especially at dusk when they are most active.

I sympathize with your wife, as I am a mosquito magnet also, and Eric never gets bit. Mosquitoes are very much a function of whether there's lots of wind, which keeps them away, and the amount of rain and what the vegetation is like. You didn't say if your unit is on the ground floor, but the closer to the ground floor you are, the more skeeters there will be. And vegetation and swampy water definitely will increase the little buggers. I've never personally tried mosquito milk, but I should. You can buy those mosquito coils in the grocery store. If the mosquitoes are particularly bad, we usually pick up a couple packages of them.

We're on the third floor at La Vista Beach, and still see the occasional mosquito on our balcony, usually in the early morning. We always pick up a package of mosquito coils, and leave whatever we don't use for the next occupant. We find putting one on the floor under the table usually does the trick. And yes, mosquito milk is very good.

Yes, put the coils on the floor. We usually put them on an ash tray or similar, as they kind of make a mess.

Re: Mosquitos - 05/07/2021 02:18 PM

We put them on a piece of aluminum. Some of the coils come with a tray.

Aluminum foil is a good idea, if you have it. We don't always buy it, but as much as we cook in, we probably should.

Makes it real easy to dispose of after coils are done.

We had the occasional tiny, tiny ones, but it wasn't a big problem.

We tried to remember to spray before going out to dinner.

There wasn't a lot of rain while we were there, which probably helped.

Re: Mosquitos - 05/07/2021 04:11 PM

What exasperates my wife is that I never, ever get bites. Not just when we are here. The only things that bothers me are the occasional 'no-see-um' and the big horse flies we get up north in the summer. Someone once told us it has something to do with skin types or bacteria. IDK.

Re: Mosquitos - 05/07/2021 04:39 PM

Same with us, Eric never gets bitten either. I really do not wear a lot of fragrances at all, so it must be something in the general body chemistry. I always say that mosquitoes think that Eric is poisonous and they will die if they bite him! grin

Re: Mosquitos - 05/07/2021 04:55 PM

I have the exact problem. I am a mosquito magnet, but they rarely bother my husband. We use the mosquito coils and milk. There are also plug ins that will work for a room. You can purchase them at the large grocery store going into Philipsburg.

We also use Mosquito Milk, in a roll-on, and never have a problem.

Re: Mosquitos - 05/07/2021 09:24 PM

It's the same with us-- my husband never gets bit!
Some one also mentioned it could be blood type, but both of us are the same.
Must be hormones....lol
