Yikes! Those mountains in St. Kitts and Nevis are ones where it's usually recommended you take a guide, but that (a broken guide rope) could have happened with a guide as well -- at least they'd have one more person to help.

They are lucky people, to live to tell the tale! And his wife is one strong lady, to get him back up out and to safety!!

A prime example where medivac insurance would have been a good thing. Something like Sky Med would have flown him home to his own hospital. One never knows when you might need this insurance.

Instead of inflicting pain & suffering on this poor lout why didn't "god" simply prevent the rope from breaking in the first place? Or cause a sign to magically appear: "Beware of old and weak ropes on double black diamond trails" or "Expert skiers and dumb people only beyond this point". To simply sit back and take credit for the guy's survival and not take the blame for causing the injuries in the first place is pretty lame behaviour on the part of "god".

We will be there in Feb so I thank this dude for pointing out the local hazards. Having thanked him I probably would have figured out that a 60-70 degree slope was a stupid place to hang out. When my age falls within the degrees of slope range I move on to where the flat earth foks congregate.

You are so right! But when you are young you don't think about these things like Med-evac in case of an injury. Far from their minds. LOL

I never travel internationally without purchasing travel insurance. The cost of medical transportation is beyond just about everyone's normal means. However, be very careful about activities like this. TravelGuard, the policy I normally use has this exclusion: "mountaineering where ropes or guides are normally used." I don't know if it would cover this or not. Always read the exclusions on your policy. Most policies will not cover you if you are injured parasailing, for example.
