ice cream - 08/14/2011 02:57 AM

just like our slow cooker, our ice cream maker has been sitting in packaging for several years now. tonight, for the first time, we are making some ice cream in it. had a little taste of it before throwing it in the freezer to firm up more and it tastes incredible! vanilla ice cream. any recipes out there that anyone can share? i have a feeling that we'll be making more use of this gadget now that we've broken it in.

I wish I could help. My family used to call me the ice cream (or sometimes watermelon) kid. At a tender age my uncle took me along to my future aunt's family farm. They made hand cranked peach ice cream, to this day I've never tasted anything comparable. I wish you well in your ice cream adventures.

CS... since it's Peach season now...
use your vanilla icecream recipe, and mix in diced fresh peaches! Nuthin' Better! Peaches & Cream!
BTW... also, use some fresh vanilla beans to make the Icecream...
and scrape all the seeds off the pods to add to the icecream! YUMMMMMM!!!
and you get those litte flecks of vanilla showing! Great eye appeal!

We've been doing ice cream all summer. My grand-daughter's favorite is pumpkin!

Pumpkin Ice Cream

2 eggs
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. ginger
1 c. milk
1 1/2 c. heavy cream
dash ground cloves
3/4 c. canned pumpkin

Beat egg and sugar together until thick and cream-colored. Add spices, milk, cream, and pumpkin and blend well. Pour into ice cream maker and crank for 20 minutes (mine is a Donvier, so it says to crank every 2-3 minutes). At that point, it's soft serve. If you want it harder, freeze longer. Makes 1 quart.

This also reminds me of a great strawberry ice cream recipe made in a food processor. Came from the Cuisinart booklet.

2 pints strawberries, washed and stemmed
1/3 to 1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. lemon juice
1 c. heavy cream

Freeze the berries on a cooky sheet in one layer. If they are large, cut them in half. Or use berries that you buy frozen. Chop the berries in the processor using the metal blade, scraping the bowl and lid as necessary. Add lemon juice and sugar and process for 10 seconds. With the machine running, pour the cream through the feed tube in a steady stream. After all the cream has been added, scrape the bowl and process 5 seconds longer. Serve immediately. Makes 1 quart.

I'm sure this could be made with frozen peaches instead of strawberries. For the peach flavor, you can add a bit of almond extract, too.

Made the strawberry ice cream last night. I was surprised, it was really delicious! Family liked it but my son wanted to know how I could make a chocolate version!

Of course I am from NJ. And we had the delicious strawberries grown in NJ in June. When I read periwinkles post on her strawberry ice cream I thought, what the he-- and bought Driscolls in the supermarket. They were delicious! Do you have a problem with that? I don't frequent LI like you do but I'll take NJ produce any time!
