Very thinly sliced, peeled, briefly microwaved til soft, apples are also a great addition to the inside...
You don't need many slices... one scant layer...
I have also made a variiation of this with raspberry, blueberry, strawberry preserves & chopped almonds or toasted pine nuts for the center...
