While its nice to think they may bring the 747 back some day. It seems its days are numbered. Both American and Delta are retiring their 747 fleets this year in favor of more fuel efficient 2 engine aircraft.
It's funny. Right after I posted this I realized that the first flight I ever took overseas (outside US) was a KLM 747. I departed out of ORD's old terminal 5 (you had to board a bus to drive you out to the plane and board up the steps) 1991 I think. Smoking was till allowed, and, boy howdy, did they SMOKE.
Finally, I was near the Simpson bay Lagoon when the final flight came in for its landing. It made low a pass directly overhead before heading out to sea for its landing approach. Very cool. Did not have camera handy at the time.
