7/2/11 Monday
Today is Independence Day in Grenada; we took the bus to the Port Louis Marina for breakfast. I had the traditional Grenadian breakfast of salt fish, bakes, fresh fruit, juice and coffee; Kim had a full English breakfast. The juice was the best we have had so far, my mango juice was so thick it seemed as though someone had forced a ripe mango through a sieve. We chose an outdoor table and the sun was so hot the butter melted in the dish before we had finished eating. After breakfast we took a walk around the end of the point to a small beach the marina had built. I spotted it last year when we were anchored off the point on Skyelark. We spent some time relaxing and deciding what to do for the day. Being a holiday everything was closed and the streets were nearly empty. We took a bus to the National Stadium where a parade was to take place. The stadium is fairly new and very nicely laid out. It was fun to see all the people dressed in their country’s colors. Kim and I were decked out as well, her with a flag and me with tee- shirt and visor. I felt a little too touristy but we were met with smiles as we got on the bus and received positive comments all day. The parade was fun, first groups representing different eras in Grenada’s history and culture performed as they marched, while the announcer explained what each represented. After the cultural performance the military and various national youth organizations took the field for precision marching. The dress uniforms of the police and troops showed the English roots of the country. We grabbed food from some of the vendors lining the road on the way in, so we wouldn’t have to leave during the event. Snack size portions of BBQ chicken and ribs were $8 EC each, I had some oil down which was $10 EC. We stayed to watch the parades and left after the Prime Ministers speech. We grabbed some ribs to go and eat for dinner at the hotel. After getting back we walked down the beach and had a drink at one of the bars. We also topped by the craft and spice market to chat with a few people we know there. We finished up at Jenny’s Place which is right next door to the hotel.
