Well, we left the hotel at 5:15 and headed towards Maho. A short stop for gas and we were on our way to the dog party. Before we got to Marigot, the traffic ground to a halt, and after fifteen minutes we had moved maybe one car length, so it was not to be. Sadly we turned around and came back home. We stopped at Toppers for dinner, where David had the gnocchi, and I had the brisket. The brisket never disappoints, and there’s enough left over for at least one more meal. By 7:30 when we left the place was empty; hard to understand on a Saturday night.
This morning it is completely overcast, and there are some pretty strong waves crashing in front of the pool here. I doubt it’s a beach day, but things could change.
Of course, as we all now know, things didn’t change. After a nice breakfast at the Hideaway, we drove down to Market Garden in the morning to get some groceries and ran into Motown Tim and his lovely wife (Sylvia? I’m so bad with names ) We were both hoping to get some of the Rasta farm arugula, but they had sold out. I picked up some watercress until Sylvia (I hope that’s the right name ) reminded me of rapini, which is so good in a pasta dish, so I got that. It had started raining quite hard while we were in the store, and we got completely drenched just getting the groceries into the unit.
After a quiet morning reading, the rain lulled enough for David to walk up to the office and rent a couple of DVDs, so we watched movies in the afternoon. At Chez Georgia, dinner consisted of another pasta creation using the rapini instead of arugula. It was quite tasty, along with the fresh baguette and French butter that we picked up.
This is the first time we have experienced a complete washout day on the island, and it was quite interesting to watch the boats continue to ply the bay in front of our unit. The waves were sometimes huge, and then they’d calm to almost nothing. At times we couldn’t see the horizon at all; other times Saba was visible through the rain. I was happy we had our internet access, as it was fun to follow what everyone else was experiencing during the storm. Marty’s reports from the Dream bar at Caravanserai were incredibly entertaining, as the diverting aircraft apparently flew right over the bar!
The storm appears to have cleared out this morning, and I’m going to try to talk David into heading for a beach. Maybe Karakter would be a good choice today, as it’s close to home if the weather turns bad….
