Covid-19 Update - St. Maarten
Govt. to reevaluate length of lockdown after impromptu, curfew breaking jou'vert jams
After the impromptu, curfew breaking jou'vert jams in Dutch Quarter and Fort Willem this morning, government will now reevaluate the length of the lockdown.
"With your behaviour, with your lack of discipline, and lack of thinking about the other man, now we will have to reevaluate whether this lockdown will have to continue even longer." - St. Maarten Prime Minister Silveria Jacobs
Police is investigating the jou'vert revelry. Fines and jail time are pending for revelers and promoters of the festivities.
The morning of April 27, King's Day, is traditionally when the jou'vert jam around Philipsburg is held. This year, due to Covid-19 this and all other carnival festivities were cancelled and the country went into lockdown.
