The fence is for security, with the sea right up to the edge people would cut through the property if it wasn't there, also at night it keeps the bad boys out. It takes away from the view at ground level but on the plus side if you're using your laptop or iPad and you want to go to your room for a drink or something you can leave it right on the table in the courtyard, and at night there's no worries about leaving the windows open to hear the sea more clearly
