I just read another trip report which mentioned animals in the road, so for anyone thinking about driving in Antigua, you may want to read on.
On my 1st 2 day rental, the roads were pretty clear if you don't count the speed bumps (entry to each village), potholes, trenches (look like left over construction lines across the road).....hint dusty lines on blacktop, cars parked along the road in all sorts of places but not slowing anyone down and a few goats which I noticed along with donkeys on my taxi ride from the airport.
But on my 2nd 2 day rental things got a little more exciting. We had all the stuff in the 1st time around but a few bonuses.......I took Fig Tree Drive coming out of English/Falmouth Harbour area to get to Jolly Harbour where I was wrapping up my visit. I was in a little hurry because I was meeting agent to get keys @ set time. But we did stop for black pineapples (finger bananas too) along the way (important priority).......back on the road we zigzagged past a few working donkeys with locals aboard & then got to the west coast working our way on the last leg with the beach & beautiful water just off to my left (passenger side when driving on the left)............so as I had the pedal to the metal (not really but sounds good) focusing to avoid all the usual hazards..........my co-pilot says watch out, watch out, watch out...louder & louder......since I don't see anything unusual in my field of vision, I'm thinking the pineapples are trying to escape. But no, just then at least three (or more) full size horses appeared to my left running thru some medium size trees & proceed directly across the road in front of us (now that I came to a halt quickly) and across to the other side.
So keep your eyes peeled for stampedes (goats, donkeys, young school kids in uniforms or horses practicing for Kentucky Derby) & buckle up in Antigua <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Yikes.gif" alt="" />
