Not sure what your neighbor means by beaches being closed (they have not been), but there are rarely any issues related to jellyfish in Cayman that would force you from the water. On occasion there can be groupings of thimble jellyfish that may cause an itching reaction to some individuals, but they would usually show up in May/June.
Snorkel air just tastes better than canned air...
