There must be a lot more to this story.

How would we know he's not a nice man? I never knew him personally but that's a pretty broad statement.

Did you read the article? Sentenced to 20 years in jail for murdering his son doesn't sound very "nice" to me!

You probably missed this part of the story.

Quote
Agence France Presse (AFP) reported that Turquin (68) was condemned in 1997 in Nice for the murder of his eight-year-old son Charles Edouard. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison. The body of the boy was never found and Turquin had always claimed his innocence.
His appeals were rejected, but in July 2006, he was released on parole after serving 10 years of his sentence.

No, I saw that but it says that a body was never found and he has claimed his innocence. Not sure that this is the forum to pronounce guilt or innocence on an old case in a foreign country - that's all I'm saying.

I saw that part of the story. But it also says that no body was ever found and he has always claimed his innocence. I just don't think this is the forum to decide his guilt or innocence on an old case in a foreign country. There COULD be more to THAT story, as well.

The fact that someone was murdered on the property at Mount Vernon is certainly very concerning. These days when we rent vacation properties, we often have no idea who our neighbours might be.

That's very true. When our friends were murdered at Cupecoy a couple of years ago, we were very concerned about going back but, thankfully, I never heard anyone say that they were not nice people.....Again, I just don't think this is the place to cast aspersions on the recently deceased.

I agree with that.

I suspect there will not be a resolution to this story.

I think you are replying to the wrong person. I never said anything about the person who was murdered. I was speaking generally about not knowing who your neighbours might be. This is for anywhere you might be renting a property. You do not have to be a bad person to be murdered today. Many good people are murdered too!

I met Dr Turquin about 1 1/2 years ago when we took our Ralphi to him for his last shots before he came to the states with us. We adopted Ralphi from the I Love My Island Dog shelter.
He was a very gentle and kind man. Very welcoming to us, as was his wife. His Veterinary office was directly behind his gated residence. We had also seen him several times at work at the shelter as we visit there at least once every trip to St Martin. He never seemed anything other than kind and giving & I know that he took excellent care of the animals at the shelter. I know nothing of his past history and don't feel that is is my place to judge since I have no information about that incident. May he rest in peace. I know that he and his work will be certainly missed.

No one should leave this world that way and also knowing none of the rest of his story, I hope he is able to RIP. Very nicely stated, pony. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" />

I was replying to you - you said it is concerning when someone is murdered and that we never know who our neighbors are. I was simply reiterating my feeling that we don't know all the facts and shouldn't judge him. Sorry if you thought I was accusing you of judging him. Clearly in your comment you did NOT cast any aspersions about him. Hope this clears that up.

It happened at a private, gated residence in the town of Mont Vernon, not the converted resort.

I think that perhaps saying that he paid his debt to society would be much better than proclaiming that we don't know the story and that the body was never found (in respect to 1997). I respect the verdicts of my peers in the US and although it is a different legal system I feel that France, having a first-world legal system, should also be afforded that same respect as well (at least by me). No one on the forum pronounced him guilty for killing his son....France did.
