Realize that the subject can be misconstrued in many ways. (especially given the cold snap we have just experienced <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/jester.gif" alt="" />)

Curious what other Canadians' experience has been with bringing food through the US mainland on to the BVI. Specifically meet products. I am always asked if I am bringing meet and produce into the US when I cross the border but never have. obviously wondering if I can bring some nice Cosoco Kirkland prime rib down to throw on the grill on the boat to save some money. Will it be confiscated?

I'm not a Canadian,nor do I play one on TV. I would think if they area asking about it, they are going to confiscate it.

It's at their discretion. Technically meat, dairy and fruit can't be brought into the US. I posted that last fall two boats checking into cruise bay had all their meat, dairy and fruit confiscated. I would not risk a expensive cut of meat.

Whatever Kim said is probably accurate. We researched the subject a couple of years ago. Certain foods cannot be brought into the US. I know that lamb is not allowed in. The list is available on the internet.

We have brought beef chicken soup yogurt with no issues on 2 occasions.

You should be able to prove the contents what ever you are bringing in. Keep labels from butchers packages etc.

Riteway has as good quality meat as Costco. Save yourself some hassles

I have never found good steaks at riteway.

The meat in Riteway in February was a bit suspect. The butcher they had, who really had done a good job, is gone. Although it may have been fine, I wasn't going to spin the roulette wheel on the "Mexican Beef" as the steaks were labeled.

I have found Riteway hit or miss. Lately seems more miss then hit. For the first time in 30 years I brought the steaks down. No issues and they were excellent!

He had issues bringing some left over jerky back into the US last trip...they thought it was pork...but once I showed him it was a turkey stick he had no issue. We found it very funny at the time as he missed the conch shells we had in out other luggage because he was so focused on 3turkey sticks

If you keep the product in its original package with the bill of sale, it becomes an easy trouble free process.

It will depend on when you are coming down. Riteway has been sold to the Canadian company that owns Cost-U-Less (North West Company) ... so ...

Does anyone know whether the Riteway will continue to operate as Riteway, or will become a Cost U Less?

Never had a problem bringing frozen beef down thru the US in transit to BVI and no problem at BVI customs as it is for personal consumption.

We brought down a cooler of frozen salmon and a few frozen products we needed (we don't eat meat or chicken and didn't know what supplies would be like on island) and we had no trouble. They only confiscated the organic peanut butter at security (they deemed it a liquid). While we were there we developed a bit of a habit with Crandall's delicious conch or saltfish pates and coconut tarts and so brought a bunch on the ferry to St. Thomas to eat while awaiting our flight. US Customs at the ferry dock searched INSIDE each pate to ensure that it was not beef. Seriously.

It is and gets more painful with every proceeding one! Yesterday was -24c w/ wind chill! The day before that it was +6c... stupid Canadian weather!
