The BVI are my favorite place on earth, especially Anegada. I cannot imagine being there in this storm. Thoughts and prayers to all the wonderful people in the islands. I hope everyone makes it through this thing safely.

The one hope you have Thorsten is that the major winds will be coming over the ridge so South Sound might get a little shelter.

Bring battery operated tools, chain saw, crowbars and plenty of deck screws.

I was going to say something similar but you beat me to it. I really hope this is not going to as bad as it looks right now. The way it looks right now I'd be checking to make sure their trip insurance is solid for trips booked months from now.

I will bet they will stage an Anegada/BVI recovery from Texas. Very hard to do from the 3rd world even on a good day without any storm...

Any word if they have shut down the electric grid yet?
Or at what hour they will - as a precaution?

No need to remind residents... but fill anything and everything with drinking water
Fill the freezer immediately with even ziplocs full of water - hopefully it will freeze in time

Power will be going out, if not already
Which also means - for the majority.. cooking will be off-line

Give it some thought - cook/fry.. prepare food, make sandwiches...

Just when you think it can't get any worse, it gets worse. Projected track is now between Anegada and North Sound with one eye wall over Anegada and the other over Necker. Max winds over 185 which makes it the strongest Atlantic Hurricane ever recorded.

Keep in mind that the force of the wind increases as the square of the speed so every 5 knots can make a huge difference in destructive power.

I wish God's Blessings on all of you in BVI. We just finished with Hurricane Harvey here in Houston and have our eyes closely watching. Looks like a rough storm and hoping it passes quickly.

Stay safe and help everyone in need.

Blessings to you all.

GlennA, I'll go back and find the article, but earlier "someone" reported a gust of 220mph was recorded...is that possible??

***I edited my post to include this ABC news quote...

"Irma was packing 185 mph winds and gusts up to 220 mph as of before 2 p.m. ET Tuesday and is expected to continue churning with deadly hurricane-force winds and a dangerous storm surge across a wide swath of the Caribbean this week before moving toward southern Florida, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC)."

I have a trip planned for mid November...hoping that is still possible even if its to help with clean up.
Praying for everyone and everything involved. I have visited this little chapel by our house many times in the last week to say prayers

Thanks Rick...
on a light moment - they note - grid will be shut down "if" winds exceed 40mph

Yeah...ok....

Keep in mind - island life means things sometimes get done on a whim

One of those moments... where it may not be advisable to procrastinate...

If you want to see the hurricane in a different ominous manner > go to accuweather.com > san juan PR > radar > push "satellite" view beneath the panel > then, zoom in. (sorry, I don't how to cut and paste). I hope/pray everyone remains safe. rrs

Finally got from one end of this thread to the other. Scary indeed. We understand our house on Jost is secured so now we wait.

Our thoughts and concerns are not the house.....they are the many wonderful people we have met through out the years, please everyone stay safe.

I hope you have trip insurance !

If you are using PTO from work I'd look for a back up vacation - the sailing is good out of Newport RI...

Ok folks....
Another issue for those remaining on island

I just got an email from the bank
Banks are closing for the storm

We all know how the ATM's can be out of service - quik enuff
So... be forewarned
Cash may be needed for the next few days
Credit card service is very much dependent on electricity...

NHS 5 pm update has Irma starting the expected turn to the NW. Let's hope the turn is a bit greater than forecast. The turn at least should keep Tortola out of the NE quadrant.

Grenada, Maine, Italy, Greece, Croatia If you do not have a boat need check and see how Petit St.Vincent makes out along with the airport in Barbados to get there.

Haha well the possibilities are endless! For sailing, you could see if you could get a boat out of Newport, Rhode Island and sail toward Martha's Vinyard.

If you're more of a beach person, I think the Yucatan is pretty safe from Irma, as long as you aren't flying thought Florida or Atlanta. Our favorite resorts are the Excellence Brand - luxury all-inclusives.

And of could if you can get a decent flight, now is a good time to be in Europe, even if it a short trip. Everyone is harvesting grapes right now because of the warm summer if you like wine. You can still probably get a beach week in Italy and Croatia - or pick up a boat there if you can get one. Northern Europe is still warm enough to be out all day - Amsterdam is one of our favorite cities.
