We used Stoutes - in the airport terminal and were pretty pleased with the car (a moke) and the rate (we booked through auto europe but you can book direct also). They seem to get the best revews on tripadvisor.

Though there are a couple of great rental companies in Barbados, I have and will always recommend Coconut Car Rentals as they not only offer excellent rates but their back-up service is second to none.

Whenever my sister visits Barbados this is the only place that she rents from.

thanks....I'll check in with both companies.

Do the vehicles on the island generally need back up service? I seen this mentioned a lot in other places.

We used http://www.southernrentalsbarbados.com/

Seems to be a small company....owner actually delivered the car to us at the airport.

We did a ton of exploring on all coasts in 10 days last year. Back then the maps were not 100% (showing 5 roundabouts on one road when there are 6) but we figured it out.

We had a Suzuki Swift and it was perfect to get to the beaches. (Please promise that you will not be always on the west coast!) Harrowsmith and Bottom Bay were our favourites and although you will see some locals hanging around we never felt threatened. Crane beach (away from the resort) was a different story....there are bush boys hiding in the growth against the cliffs. On our first visit 7 years ago a female lady cop walked down the beach and warned us t o be careful about leaving our stuff and going in the water. ( we thought she was going to hassle my wife who's bikini top was hanging on a bush drying)

If you want some suggestions on where to daytrip give me a shout.

After we turned the car in and checked our bags for the flight home we walked next door and toured the Concord. Do NOT miss that.

Cheers

After every Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF.

We are staying on the west coast, but my wife's cousin is getting married at the Crane, so we will be there a couple times and plan to do a lot touring.

Best suggestions for a daytrip?

Most of the car rental companies have cars that are less than 3 years old and are usually turned in and replaced at that age, however who wants to have to waste an entire day with a mechanical problem ?? The better companies will be the ones that offer reliable back-up .

If you are looking for a FULL day trip and would like to follow the wife and I on one of our notorious island drives (many TTOL members have followed us) or if you would prefer a suggested route, please drop us an email and we will be happy to meet you on the west coast or send our suggestion .

However if you really want to explore, I would seriously suggest that you rent a 4 x 4; Coconut/Dollar Car Rentals have some really nice ones, drop my friend Ryan an email and tell him that Nick sent you and I am sure you will receive a discount of some kind . You will need one of these if you are following us as we stick VERY close to the cliffs on the North/East side and sometimes cross small streams etc .

OH by the way, we always travel with a stocked cooler of “Ambassadors Brew” so you will never be thirsty LOL .

Just decided on Barbados for out next "Thelma and Louise World Tour" and will be eagerly watching these boards for tips. We are best friends who love to explore in the morning and pick a different beach each afternoon....having lunch at good local places. What do you suggest for a couple mornings??

I vow to never say I should have!
