Jan. 20: Cumberland Bay, St. Vincent
We set off early for our long sail to Cumberland Bay which is located half way up the leeward side of the island of St. Vincent. The winds were light and from an unfavorable direction so we motor sailed as necessary to arrive in a reasonable amount of time. I really love this bay, it is a very idyllic setting with farmland lining the hills opposite the bay and it has more local bar and restaurant options than Wallilabou; also you don’t get the bus loads of cruise ship visitors that come to see the remnants of the Pirates of the Caribbean set. A boat boy followed us in to take our stern line to shore, we usually give them 10 EC for this service, as we were getting the boat in order the vendors came along side to display their wares in hopes of making a sale; I picked up a coconut change purse for Kim, from “Old Joseph” and a carved fish necklace from Frankie and Ezekiel.

Boats in the anchorage

Dinner was going to be ashore at Mojitos; Julian has his gas bottles now so he won’t have to cook our meal at Doddsie’s house like he did the last time we were here. Some of us went in early to have a couple mojitos while watching the sunset; we find this bay offers some of the best sunsets we see in this area. We spoke with the man who lives next to the bar, he had a whole production line in his yard making decorative calabash bowls and hanging globes. After a while the rest of the crew joined us and we settled in for dinner. All the meals were nicely done; I had a side salad with mine while many of the others opted for the callalou soup as a starter. After dinner we went back to Skyelark for a quick nightcap; Sarah, Mike, and Arvil are going to climb La Soufriere tomorrow so they made an early night of it. The night air was a little cooler than it had been the past few days, I passed on sleeping in the cockpit opting for my bunk in the forward cabin.
