Daily Herald storyIs this a pre-Luis restaurant that they are talking about, the remains of which they are removing? That's sure some drop-off getting into the ocean!!!

Carol,
We had a similar drop off when we were there this past trip.
With reference to what they’re removing, as I recall, there once was a huge restaurant, The Shipwreck, right on the beach at the approximate end of the walkway from the parking lot in the general area between what are currently Rosie’s and DaLeos (sp?), as well as a full service bar with a good sized patio and steps down to the sand. There were also additional restaurants further down the beach towards what was building 90 and the beach towel concession, some shops and restroom facilities there, too. Little Ocean Reef rings a bell as the name of the restaurant further down the beach but I could be mistaken on that.
The debris might be a part of any of that. Or not?
Respectfully,
pat

Pat--thanks for the info. I thought they had to be talking about a pre-Luis restaurant. That amount of a drop-off would be a total no-go for me there, as far as getting into the water.

The drop off was huge the day we went, but the turn-off for me was the way the chair concessions were set up, completely usurping the beach area in front of Rosie’s with little to no space at all between them along with the three large tour boats that put in to disgorge their guests onto the beach. I was totally turned off by this and I assumed this was possibly due to many ships in Port that day. But they did clean up theirs debris before they left which impressed me as I’ve seen them leave it behind in the past. The closeness of the chairs had the umbrellas actually touching each other.
Hopefully it hasn’t become the new norm for Mullet.

That is very unusual, I think, to only have room for one row of chairs? Even when there has been a fairly high cliff to get into the water, there was still plenty of actual beach, when I've been there.

Carol and Carib,
I don’t think what Carib describes is normal, but trust me, it’s not all that abnormal either, just as is the case at Maho Beach. The ocean comes and goes taking what she wants when she wants it and usually returns it at her leisure. Another case in point is Cupecoy Beach. For the first fifteen years or so we visited the island there was always plenty of beach from the Cupecoy Beach Club area all the way up to past the Ocean Club to about where Dany set up shop, or at least there was anytime we were on island. And then it went away for a few years and has been coming and going regularly ever since.
The ocean is an incredible phenomenon. In all the years we’ve been visiting there, Mullet Beach has never been known to us as a seashell spot yet my daughter and her family were there one summer and my granddaughter collected every kind, shape and color of whole seashells you could imagine. We were amazed and to this day we’ve yet to see such a thing.
The concrete structures, including the Shipwreck and her bar plus the other accommodations there were dated from the early days of Mullet Bay Resort & Casino, pre Luis and were pretty much destroyed between that storm and the following hurricane season. The only thing that remained was the sidewalk and those wonderful Mullet restrooms that some might recall.
We used to walk the beach from point to point, or from what was known as the Honeymoon Walk to the rocky promenade that was home to the fabled Building 90 and occasional huge boulders jutting out of the sand were a fairly common thing on the far end of the beach.

There was a time when the original Shipwreck was further down the beach and set back but I believe it was destroyed early on in the MBR&C saga.
On the rocky cliffs on the Maho side of the beach area but set well back in the cliffs, which I think might be what Ed is referring to, the first year we visited SXM, in 1973, there was a good sized building there that housed the Gourmet Restaurant, the Grand Casino, Spritzer and Furhman and the resort conference facility. This was all destroyed in one of the earlier hurricanes and ultimately relocated to its final location along the road to the Hillside area. The pilings in the rocky area just off the beach were a part of a walkway that connected that area to the original Shipwreck and ultimately to the beach and beyond.
Mullet Bay Resort was such an incredibly beautiful property and while my memories might be a little cloudy with reference to those earliest trips, I feel incredibly lucky to have those memories at all.
Edited to add :
And as I recall, the original Sweet Tooth Ice Cream Parlor was located in that same building near the rocky cliff, and once you got your ice cream cones you could walk out and around the cliff side pool that was also in that general area. It was a lovely spot to eat your ice cream and enjoy the beautiful night ocean air. As the waves came crashing in, sometimes they’d come all the way up on the coral cliffs and you could watch the crabs scatter out of their way.

CaribLee,
Thank you for your confidence but trust me on this, the only thing I can be fairly accurate about is Mullet Bay Resort and the list of amenities she once offered. If you asked me pretty much about anything else I’d be doing a lot of hemming and hawing and second guessing myself constantly. But thank you.....

Mike,
Being a kid at that resort back in that time frame had to leave you with an incredible set of memories. We were young adults - mid twenty something’s - the first time we visited but we didn’t bring our girls until the early 80s and oh boy, do they have good memories of the place.
Some of the stories I’m hearing now that never came out back then are enough to make my straight hair curl but it was all good in the end. The girls were the ones who introduced us to the natural diving pool just off the honeymoon walk and back and into the coral formations there. They met some local kids who showed it to them and they shared it with us. My heart was in my throat just watching them but they loved it and we would never have known of it’s existence were it not for the kids. The resort (and probably most of the island back then....) didn’t have TVs yet but there was never any chance of them being bored as there was always some form of local entertainment/activity for them to jump into.
And I do remember those crab races. My crab never won but it was still fun and the girls loved the Sunday night island buffets with the pan music and all.
But today it’s all just memories with an occasional concrete piling or piece of a foundation working its way to the surface.
Respectfully,
pat

The beach condition in this respect is usually left firmly in the hands of Mother Nature. The leveling and/or importing of extra sand might solve the immediate problem but i’m Thinking, and not from any particular source of knowledge or specific info, it might create other problems down the road. Sometimes it just doesn’t pay to mess with MN. She will often retaliate in ways we don’t even want to contemplate. I would guess, from an ecological viewpoint it’s best to let nature run its course. Just a guess......
My personal thought is it is what it is. We experienced that five foot drop last trip and, being as short as I am, I never did get into the water there. We ultimately left and went to another beach. As much as I love (and have always loved....) Mullet Bay Beach, my personal island favorite, between the height of the sand cliff and the huge numbers of chairs and umbrellas in such very close proximity to each other, not to mention the three big boats that came in while we were there, we decided to move on to a beach more to our liking.
