I almost committed to a charter with Brent quite a few years ago but in the middle of talking to him my dad was diagnosed with cancer and ultimately succumbed to it. He seemed genuinely like an honest guy and while I think he doubted my reasons for canceling he was very good about it. I’ve got a group a three other couples and would like to look him up again but there’s not much info on him. Is he still in business? I see only two boat listed on his website and they seem somewhat older but we are all boat owners ourselves so we know that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Most of the recent things I can find are all negative which surprises me. Has anybody had any recent experience with him? I appreciate any feedback, thanks!

Ahoy Captain, I love the Internet, Yes, a little older and wiser, and still here. Yes, 3 Leopard 42/43 cats all going strong. Looking for more boats for the ‘fleet’ with a waiting list for Dec and January.
On Island Fun, the Leopard 42, yesterday marking the chain every 25’ and then upgrading the hatches. I will haul it out next week to paint the bottom myself and new wax and graphics.
Over $15K in upgrades on MoonShadow, the Leopard 43, this year with more solar panels, batteries, Jib, davits, etc. Hauled and I painted the bottom in May.
Over $25K in upgrades on Outback, the Leopard 43, this summer with bottom paint, new electronics, etc.
All three yachts moved less than 1 Foot during Irma. Not 1 drop of salt water below deck. Yes, all three dismasted, all at the spreader so no damage to the chain plates, and so now all three yachts have NEW, not salvaged, $60K worth of masts/ booms/ furling/ standing rigging/ running rigging.
All three yachts ended ’18 with a profit and ’19 is much better. And ’20 will be much better than ’19 thanks mostly to all my Repeats and Referrals. Yes, all three yachts are pre-recession but with very aggressive proactive maintenance, and the fact I still do most of the cleaning myself, I will put their safety, reliability, comfort and cleanliness against any other bareboat. And 7 Nights for $4900.
I sincerely apologize if I doubted your reasons for cancelling your charter. Cancer is a long dark story for my family. Yes, I have Friends and Enemies/Competition on the Internet. 30 Years in this business and a very personal commitment to honesty and hard work and accountability, I am sure I have my share of Trolls. I don’t do Facebook or Instagram or Snap or MySpace or any of that, so if you don’t see a rebuttal to the Trolls it is because I am doing dirty work on a boat.
Had one of the best weekends of my life 5 weeks ago with the Prettiest Girl in Paris. I still run every night and still no drugs so, Yes, I am still here and will be for a very long time.

Hello, I'm the owner of Island Fun, one of the Leopards in Brent's fleet. Currently, Brent has three Leopards. mine (a 42), and two 43's. All with four cabins with four heads. Brent has all three boats in pristine condition. All with solar panels. The only damage Island Fun encored by Irma was the loss of our mast. With great effort, Brent managed to get NEW masts for all three boats., Our Leopard as well as Moon Shadow and Outback run, sail and look as nice as most new boats. Brent has done an outstanding job. Last season, Brent's boats were constantly out on charters while many other companies had most if not all their boats on the docks for weeks at end. When we put Island Fun in Brent's fleet in 2014 she was in great condition with not much wear and tear. This last season, after new varnish, new mast, sonar panels, annual scrape and painting of the bottom I had to remark Island Fun was in even better condition than when we bought her. We chartered with Brent before we became boat owners so we know Brent both as customers and boat owners. Brent is the only charter company I would trust with my boat. Maintenance and upkeep are top priory with Brent. Those are key issues for all boats new and old. I have seen many newer boats in the BVI in poor condition. It's a pleasure arriving at Sea Cow Bay and seeing Island Fun, running perfect, looking in tip top shape, fully ready for a new sailing adventure. All I can say is you won't go wrong chartering through Brent. Brent does everything possible to make sure his clients have a great sailing experience.

Hi
We were on Moonshadow in May of this year. The boat had some minor wear and tear but mechanically in great shape.
We had high wind for the first part of the week and the boat sailed great. Both engines worked perfect never needed a drop of oil
The Jib was brand new and the main was in good shape. The solar panel worked great and never need to run engines for refrigeration.
We would charter again from Brent.

Brent, how do you handle owner's time for your charter boats and where do you keep them?

I have chartered with Brent pre-Irma and have one scheduled in January, I would not hesitate to charter with him, Boats are not brand new with the latest and greatest of everything, but everything worked well on our previous boats and they were very clean. He is honest and upstanding in my experience, and I think once you meet him you wont have any doubts. That is why we are going back. Ill post again once we come back at the end of January.

Ahoy Captain, 8 Weeks of Owner Time, plus unlimited within 2 weeks of any Open Time.
I keep the the yachts here in Sea Cows Bay, a Hurricane Hole certified by both the BVI Gov and my fleets Insurance co., all within sight of my boat. A few weeks on the dock this year while I am on vacation, otherwise on mooring balls. If a big storm comes in I have prepared lines in the trees and chain to the dock to secure the yachts to the small island here, all the same as Irma, all for free. If I am on my annual 2 weeks summer vacation and a big storm comes in I fly back to be here before it hits, which seems to be every other year thanks to global warming.

Brent, do you still prefer to not take boats without generators and AC or has that changed?

Ahoy Captain, Yes, I wish I had a +/- 45' cat with a gen-set and air-con. I probably lose 1 in 5 inquires due to the absence of that feature. Of course I now have solar panels on all the yachts which has cut the engine use by 1/2 and the refers always come back with ice on the plates, but as my business matures, I wish I had 1 yacht with a gen-set for over night and solar for the day.

Hi Rich,

I have known Brent for 20+ years and chartered more than 15 times from him. He is simply the most customer service friendly and detailed person in the Caribbean charter industry.

In 2017, we bought S/Y Moonshadow, a Leopard 43, and put it in his service. He has turned out to be just as great when he manages our boat.

Walter

Does Captain's Compass allow boats to go to Anegada? I seem to remember that it was not allowed, but then again, my memory is not what it use to be.

Ahoy Captain, Yes, If you can provide a sail plan to be confirmed during the personalized chart briefing, easily based on resources from bvipirate.com , and a weather check 24 hours prior to the run up. I never did when I was Pro Valor Charters from '92 to '02, as that was prior to GPS/Chartplotters and the new channel markers.

Hi,

We chartered with Captain’s Compass for the first time last year. We had originally booked for Nov 2017, but the storm obviously delayed that booking. Brent was first class in how he handled the storm induced cancellation.
We have chartered with two other companies in the BVI and had very good experiences. We tried Captains Compass because of the price, and heard very positive reviews from colleagues who had been with CC for years. The reality is we couldn’t have afforded a 4 state room cat at our previous spots.

Reality check:
Sea Cow Bay is not very glam, certainly compared to the other two marinas we previously used, although Nanny Cay is just a bay away.
The boats are not new, and therefore the interior styles are dated compared to new cats at the boat shows.

Real Deal:
I will say one of our biggest comments was how clean the boat looked and smelled. Meaning no smell.
The boat was in very good shape and all rigging and required equipment was in very good to great shape.
Once we got sailing, we had no issues, as in zero. A few impressive touches by Brent like his bridle system for mooring balls, and the solar panels that meant no charging at night. I don’t think we used 10 gallons of diesel all week.

We would not hesitate going back when looking for a cat of that size.

Any further questions feel free to ask or pm.

Thanks for the information. My brother has a Leopard 444 coming out of charter in June. I will have him get in touch with you. He is currently in Annapolis at the boat show so it might be a week or so. Is the contact information on your website current?

Ahoy Captain, Yes, the web site is up to date. Yes, I would like to help with your Brothers Leopard 44. There are a lot of tricks to getting a very good phase out from Sunsail/Moorings/etc. #1 is having someone on site more than once a week to document the parts and labour, and #2 is having some one to set up a good working relationship with the technicians (a pizza on Monday and a beer on Friday), and #3 is it may also be helpful to mark all the equipment that has been flagged by the surveyor to see if it is replaced, repaired, or just painted (starting with the hose clamps and shackles).

Walter,
We’ll be on Moonshadow in just about 2 weeks. As sailing newbies we rented with Brent in 2014 on the LomDee for a birthday celebration, had such an amazing time we’re coming back over Halloween for another 10 daze. In 2014 we sailed with Captain Carol (whose since retired) and are looking forward this year to another adventure.

I have also used Captains Compass...pre hurricane...and had no issues! The boats are older...so! The boat sailed and engines worked as required. Would definitely use him again! As for Sea Cow Bay...I didn't find it much different than some of the other bases except maybe Moorings and Sunsail.

I agree with Gene's Bar and Grill...wasn't sure if it was still there. We ate there before we left and when we got back. Great people and food!
