We are from Calgary, Alberta, Canada and want to travel to either Mexico, Belize or any other place where we can drop our clothes and live without them for extended periods of time without travelling somewhere for anything.
We want a basic accommodation without the hotel setting where we would live like we do at home but under warm conditions and with water nearby ( ocean or lake ) but would want to have some ability to go to nearby attractions. We were considering Zipolite but not sure of the accommodation, Cambium in Dominican Republic but that place seems a little too boring? and Cuba which might be nice. We would love to meet up with others at any of these places if we could only connect with others to do that. We might consider Tulum at the south end but it seems that they might not have decent internet or basic services. Any ideas? We are on a very limited budget for now so want to be naked, free, enjoy the sun and relax but have no fear of mosquitos or other like animals that could make it miserable.

FireProf is totally right.
We have been there a number of times. Fantastic is too mild a term.
PM me for details if necessary.

Sounds like it may be a good place for us. What food alternatives both on resort and nearby? We are not big fans of Mexican food so thinking that would be an issue.

Wait... it's RUSTIC.

No paving, no utility poles, they make their own electricity for lights and fans. No cell service, we didn't even see an airplane go over. No timeshare salesmen, shopping centers or sombrero stands either.

There is not much near Playa Sonrisa except for beautiful Caribbean Beach and a house here and there. Their breakfast (included) is wonderful. Good coffee, fresh baked goods, fruit, jam and eggs are set out for you to help yourself. Lunch is offered at a reasonable price and Dinner can be ordered during the day. It's not so much of a "resort" as a B&B. The web page link from FireProf is quite accurate and represents a real idea of what to expect.

Murph is a great conversationalist and makes a great drink at their "Apres Ski" Tiki bar too. When he is otherwise occupied the bar works on the honor system. Just make a check mark on your designated clipboard and settle up when you check out. Cool huh?

The night sky is black, real Velvet Elvis Black. To a city boy like me it is amazing enough to stare at for hours. A few beacons from distant navigation aids might be from Xcalak or maybe Ambergris Cay in Belize are visible on the horizon but that is the only sign of humans. Rural, yes, rustic, yes, but very comfortable.

The Leaky Palapa and one or two other places are in Xcalak, 7k of bad road away. Why leave?

With the info that "bug" has given and what is on Playa Sonrisa's website ... I would think that guests would want to stop at a store, prior to their arrival, and shop for foods they would want to eat.

We do this when we visit Club Orient. We both can take only so much rich French food and we like to eat in once in a while. We even take some food items from home and then supplement with fresh vegetables and fruit from the market.

I'd love to visit Playa Sonrisa but I think I'll contact them and find out what the "fare" is like and be ready to do some shopping prior to arrival to get some things we'd like to eat on our own. Seems to me that the kind of "Mexican food" they would serve ... is probably not the same kinda Mexican food you may think it is.

PS ... I've seen similar pictures of the picture posted by Bugambilias. I imagine my wife's naked silhouette standing in the foreground on this exact spot. It's something I'd have enlarged, matted and framed for our "naked" art wall!

Here's some reading for you...food is served at Playa Sonrisa five or six nights a week, but you are always welcome to check out the half dozen or so other options along the beach. The Leaky Palapa has some of the best food I've ever eaten in my life, and Cindy's meals at PSR are a close second.

Playa Sonrisa is an outstanding place. The food for breakfast, lunch and dinner that Murph and Cindy provide is outstanding. The Leaky Palapa has some of the best food anywhere, but know at this time of the year it generally is closed for a few months. When it gets busy, there are probably 10-12 people on site. No matter it just means more room for the rest of us.

N-Resort Jamaica. A package deal would probably be as cheap as anything you will get to Mexico or further south with airfare being as high as it is because of fuel prices.

At Casa Banda, we might be able to provide you with some or most of the things you are looking for. There is a trip report on this forum from one of our returning guests.

I have looked at Playa Sonrisa a number of times over the years, but my wife is freaked out at the idea of having to drive there from the airport in Cancun. I got her past the idea of doing without a hairdryer, but that drive in a rental car is a major hurdle. Any suggestions or thoughts on driving, given the ups and downs of crime in Mexico?

Life is too short not to be happy!

Club Orient is sometimes accused of being somewhat 'rustic', but it has all of the other features desired, including the tolerance of dropping all clothing. It does have internet service (a bit slow), a full service restaurant, and it has Orient Bay, a wonderful little piece of the Atlantic Ocean, to swim in. Prevailing winds make it very difficult for mosquitos to get at you.

We've made that drive about five times now. Once you get out of Cancun and past Playa del Carmen it is pretty uneventful. It is a long trek, however, five to six hours. We like to break it up with an overnight in Tulum on one end or the other. If you have a week or more, it's well worth the trip.

Mak Nuk Village in Tulum is a great stop over...not at all rustic, though!

If you want only about what you have at home then Club O would be the place for you. A lot of people go there and never leave the club. There is a little store, laundry (which is hardly used) , exercise room for those who don't want to relax and a large access to the salt water bathtub (called the ocean) to relax by. You can spend all of your time between your room and the ocean and never have to get dressed. You can even shop in the Botique and eat in the restaurant the same way. Be forewarned that if you ever go you will be hooked and will return!!! Check out their website and the facilities are represented well.
