thank you for this special treat...I've been thinking of going to Vienna - do you think there would be enough to do when there are no Christmas markets? How many days are you spending there? You did not mention your hotel - I would want to stay somewhere low/moderate price but in a good location. Thanks for the help, patty

We were in Vienna in August on a river cruise. We would have loved to have stayed for several days to a week.

You would find plenty to do. It is a beautiful city with tons of site seeing, and many cultural events.

Sungoddess,

If you can hang on a couple days I will have time to do a full trip report. The blog is keeping me real busy right now because I do not want to miss any Vienna time. I am day slow, but all is good. I have a great recommendation for you and there is plenty to do in Vienna to keep you busy. Stay tune and start searching for some good walking shoes smile

Hi Tom,

Reading your blog makes me hungry.

Although, I've only been in Vienna on a river cruise, my parents and I frequently visited Austria when we lived in Nurnburg. Alas, it was in the fairly early 50's and because of my father's rank and security clearance he was not permitted to be in Vienna.

As a child, I was a very picky eater. Really good German and Austrian food changed that!

Oh, those pastries! Sacher Torte gets all the press. We've always found it to be rather tasteless and dry. There are so many other wonderful choices.

The Christmas Markets are amazing in both Germany and Austria!

AND the cathedrals are really cold. I still remember how cold after all these years.

Thanks Pat and Carol for the kind words. We are back home after a 24+ hour return trip. Weather on the east coast played havoc with our flights. Hoping to do a trip report tonight or tomorrow with details and lessons learned. Stay tuned.

Yes, I'm sure that weather was really bad timing for you on the return trip!! Glad you went to Vienna in the winter so that I could go along, as I doubt I will ever do it myself!! Something in me can't deal very well with cold weather any more!

Well I finally had time to put together a trip summary. Hopefully I will answer some of your questions Sungoddess, bit if I do not I am more than ready to field them. Sorry for being so slow posting, but last couple days have been crazy.

Carol - I hope you do not mind but I decided to do the trip report in the blog as a closing entry. Let me know if that is not acceptable way for future reports... see we are already planning...

So here is our Trip summary: Virtually Visiting Vienna - Trip Summary

Hi Tom,

I really enjoyed your blog. As for "the look," don't all wives get to do that?

Although we spent just a very full day in Vienna, we really enjoyed it. The Lippizans had just come back from their summer vacation to the city stables.

We also attended a wonderful Mozart concert given in a castle.

Would love to see the Christmas Markets.

I always enjoy your blogs and trip reports, and you usually make me laugh at some point. "The look" did it this time. Paul has seen it too when he gets too absorbed in his video.

It is funny I have a picture from 1977 not long after we were engaged with "the look".

My son saw the picture and said, "Dad you were in big trouble!" "The look" has not changed in 42 years we have known each other. (35 in marriage).

Thanks for following along.

If you plan to go in August, you might want to think about late August. Many European countries use August for their summer holiday. As a result sometimes places you'd like to see, or restaurants you'd like to try may be closed. By the end of August and early September everything is open again.

We had great weather during the last week of August and the first week of September.
