Honestly, I personally would never even think about booking a trip to that area, as I would not feel safe.

15 “suspicious” people entered a restaurant on the busiest tourist corner in Playa, a bunch of police followed them in and the group opened fire on the police - crazy stuff!

There were 4 shootings within 10 days recently on 5th Ave and 10th Ave - crowded tourist areas..

This just happened in Cancun -

It’s all relative…the cartel violence is indeed “a thing” here. It’s one of the two reasons we decided to sell our home here and visit other Carib nations we feel safer in. But I’d guess 99+% of tourists never see these events, and almost as many never read of them.

And of course there are less touristy areas that are safer. But as a first-time visitor, an informed traveler is a smarter traveler…

Where is this in relation to Cancun and Riviera Maya? Has the safety level changed since our last visit in 2019?

These events were in Playa Del Carmen and Cancun. We aren’t seeing a lot of activity outside Tulum, and even there it’s been relatively quiet with just an occasional incident.

So no major change from 2019, and no change in the state dept. safety level. Covid crippled tourism and many workers left the area, as in all tourist areas, but everything is back to normal and it’s busy as ever…It just got to be too busy for us to live there, but we return for visits for the beauty, culture, and especially the people!

As we look to other areas of the Caribbean to winter we see more street crime on St Maarten and Tobago, for example…
