If you follow the various TripAdvisor forums that cover the Quintana Roo tourist areas, you will see many, many posters telling new visitors they will be absolutely safe if they don’t venture out of the tourist zones, don’t get involved with drugs, etc, etc…

What these “advisors” fail to realize is that most of the cartel activities - eg. Shaking down business owners, enforcing their territory, and punishing businesses when they do not comply - take place in the tourist zones. That is where the $$$ is.

So the odds of being caught-up in these shootings are slim, but it is still a risk…

Yes, this one was in the height of the tourist zone. And I really do not want to even have to consider that remote possibility that something like that could happen, on vacation.

And another April 10, initial report translated -
The man who was shot to death while resisting the theft of his Rolex watch inside a Tulum cafeteria called Starbucks Coffee was identified as David González Cuéllar; it would be a businessman from Monterrey who was visiting this city.

It May Interest You: One dead after shooting attack in Tulum, three suspects arrested.

During the failed robbery attempt, an escort who protected the businessman, identified as Luis Carlos C., opened fire on the criminals, seriously injuring one of them, however, he could not prevent his protected from losing his life in the attack.
The attempted robbery, in which there was an exchange of shots, was attributed to a gang of Rolex watch thieves that would operate in this destination in the Mexican Caribbean, and caused the evacuation of both the business where the events occurred, and another one nearby. .

After reporting the attack, the authorities reported the arrest of three people in total, including the alleged assailant injured by the escort, of whom it was mentioned, was also injured by the men who perpetrated the attempted robbery.
