Flying out of JFK in October to SXM. Should I book the flight now or wait for a better fare. It is currently $436 RT from JFK. Thanks...

Very good price, I'd book it. Haven't seen much lower than that direct from JFK in a long time.

Book it! People flying from the east coast are spoiled. I would not even question or think about a fare like this.

I admit we are. Last year a colleague of mine booked last minute for a mid week fare and got a great fare on JetBlue of $376. We don't wait last minute so the best we've booked in the last 5 or 6 years had been about what the OP is referencing.

Thanks.

Sorry, but from somebody who pays $600-$800 with a connection (like many on this board), the whining about anything over $450 from the east coast gets old.

If I had to worry about $40 or so in fares, I would not be here.

As another who only flys fromJFK, I'd say book it and don't look back, but do make a point of setting up notifications because more likely than not, there will be many slight time changes between now and then.

I'm not whining, they asked and I answered.

Louise,

I think that was a purely rhetorical response and not intended to be mean or directed at you personally. And for sure, that poster is not a 'hater' by any sense of the term. And you know what - if you WERE whining, that would be okay, too. I know some who do it all the time.....

As another member on this board told me, if they saw a fare like that they would book 3 trips a year for the next 5 years!

pat, you are correct. I used the term in a rhetorical manner to try and make a point.

As a side note, for the people who fly from the east coast and have the luxury of multiple airports, multiple airlines with non-stop flights that arrive late morning or early afternoon.....what fare do you think is reasonable?

What fare would make you buy and not question if it was a good deal?

Thanks.

Hey rural, I always seem to pull off sub 400 from JFK in march or April. Hope that luck keeps up. That being said I also don't book until 2 or so months before the trip. Not sure if that's a factor but thought I should add it.

Thanks for all your feedback. I will book it now rather than wait. My friend is flying out of Portland Maine and it is $562 round trip, stopping in JFK. Wondering if that will go down at some point before October. Maybe we should not procrastinate, always hard to know...

Rural, I live in Connecticut. I have traveled out of Hartford-which always has 1 stop, jfk, LaGuardia and Newark. The most I've ever paid was $511 but that was in March. It's usually in the &460-480 area. This year I found a flight leaving 4/24 for $381 non stop out of jfk. Anything in the 400s is a good fare. I sign up for fare watcher every year and once they go under 500 I purchase. The 381 was a happy fluke.

I feel very comfortable booking in the 400s. We were never able to take advantage of any lower fares and we're ok with that. I have booked as high as $540 (acknowledging that "high" is relative) but that trip fares came down and at the time American gave a refund in the form of a voucher. Don't believe we ever used it because we started flying JetBlue. We have been able in the past to use vouchers but only a couple of times for another trip.

Personally wouldn't book at $600 or higher.

We usually book as soon as the airfares are posted - around the middle of December for the following October. I am smiling at this thread. If you saw the RT for two from a small urban area in southern Oregon it would make you gulp. We just gulp and don't look back.

I think I would have booked it before I even posted it on here We have never paid anything less than $500 RT, but we fly from NO.

**edited to add** That was on AA, one stop through Miami

Thank you Bob and Jeana for your kind words and re the SOS comment, it's killing me not to say what I'd like to say, but it's against the rules of the forum to wax political so I will behave myself rather than wreck the thread and take it in a direction we really don't need to go.
