It was a beautiful day...no, it was a glorious, clear and near perfect day to give back a little and participate in the International Coastal Clean Up initiated by the Ocean Conservancy, which officially took place on September 19.
A remarkable team of groundsmen and maintenance at Divi Little Bay Resort, led by Marije Lodewijks (HR Manager), chose the clean up efforts to take part on the seawall that runs along the property on the Great Bay side. Efforts started early at 7am and watered and fortified with johnny cakes, the teams scrambled and climbed deep into rock crevices to retrieve all sorts of flotsam and jetsam. At 8.30am a small team of volunteers from Aqua Mania Adventures joined the clean up to add to the large piles of garbage already retrieved by the Divi staff.
Among the notable piles of plastic bottles and large pieces of wood, the two teams picked up flip flops, sneakers, oil bottles, glass bottles, polystyrene and plastic buoys, fishing line, rope, netting and a great variety of other items both harmful and fatal to sea life.
The growing piles soon revealed how necessary the clean ups are, and how much more often they are needed. Preservation is everyone's business, clean up is everyone's responsibility and participation is vital. It all starts right here on sunny St Maarten, in business, community and neighbourhood efforts. All that is required is to show up, be present, help out. I think we are going to do this again, soon and often.
