Hoping for some input and recommendations on the above. It is me, wife and 7 year old son. We won't be staying out till midnight, but will at least be going out for dinner and will likely stay out till kid's bedtime if venue is conducive.

Suggestions on an appropriate venue? places to stay away from with a kid? Reservations required or preferred?

Wow. We stayed in Puerto Morelos in 1992 and I can tell you there was nothing there.
Found a scorpion on our hotel door one night.
Walk to town in the dark with a flashlight.
