Getting to VG?

Getting to VG? - 07/13/2018 01:39 AM

Any idea on when the airport will open. Trying to plan for April. We usually fly into San Juan at night and take the first cape air flight the next morning to VG....going to EIS and then a ferry is looking like a long day. What is everyone doing these days? Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

I doubt anyone can give you a concrete answer to your question about when the airport will reopen.

Right now going by ferry or private water taxi is your only option.

Since April is a long way off you should keep checking on the airport status. If it opens before next April make your flight reservations. If it remains closed, taking the ferry will be your fallback position.

In our 6 visits to VG over the years, I think we have gone 6 different ways. This past April, we flew into STT, spent the afternoon and night there and took the ferry to VG the following day. Originally scheduled to take Speedy's which would have gotten us to VG by 11AM, but due to Irma, Speedys was not running on Thursdays, so we took Road Town Fast Ferry to Tortola and then Speedys to VG and we still got to VG in time for lunch. I despise the San Juan airport and found flying into STT to be a much better alternative for us coming out of Cleveland. Our next trip down will most likely be a repeat of this past April, sans Irma hopefully! We enjoyed the afternoon and stay on STT and felt this was a much more relaxed way to travel. We have had too many flights delayed, canceled and changed by Cape Air and Air Sunshine in the past that this past schedule seemed to be more relaxed and enjoyable.

Airport opening is too far into the future for planning purposes but people are either flying to beef from SJU or landing in STT and ferrying over via road town or doing the Thursday and Saturday speedy's run (not operating this month) to VG. By next April virtually everything should be back to normal - several of Speedy's boats were damaged during the hurricane so repairing those will change things a lot.

We got back one week ago. We flew Southwest to San Juan, connected to InterCaribbean, caught Speedys 430 out of beef island. worked great

My first trip to the BVI was back in the 1980's and the little plane that took us out of Virgin Gorda made a couple other stops on the way to St Somehwere. Actually it was to St Maarten I guess we stopped in Beef Island and one other small airport. Maybe Anguilla?

The modernization of the airports brought huge landing fees and the loss of the old American Eagle and Liat left the milk-run flight path rather dry.

Not sure when I'll go back to VG but that little airport was pretty darn nice!

Yes it is....... and so was Puck's Flying Iguana with Lenny too and the Parrot. Hoping something like the Eagle comes back to VIJ ( may have been a different plane?
