Airlines make schedule changes all the time, yes, especially when you THINK you get things all set up a long time in advance, and then they cancel or make a schedule change. The good news I guess you know is that if they cancel or reschedule such that you can't make the flight, you can cancel with no penalty at all and get all your money back. Because of that, they are more likely to be flexible and give you more options, but of course cancelling altogether only is a good option if the price hasn't gone way up on your other options.
