OkieGuy said: I have looked at Playa Sonrisa a number of times over the years, but my wife is freaked out at the idea of having to drive there from the airport in Cancun. I got her past the idea of doing without a hairdryer, but that drive in a rental car is a major hurdle. Any suggestions or thoughts on driving, given the ups and downs of crime in Mexico? We've made that drive about five times now. Once you get out of Cancun and past Playa del Carmen it is pretty uneventful. It is a long trek, however, five to six hours. We like to break it up with an overnight in Tulum on one end or the other. If you have a week or more, it's well worth the trip. Mak Nuk Village in Tulum is a great stop over...not at all rustic, though!
