I've had friends (medical students on island) tell me that in case of an emergency, drive, walk or crawl to the French side rather than the Dutch side. I was surprised at the level of care on the French side on the one occasion I really needed it - I even got a CAT-Scan for around €400 and have been told that this can cost on average over $3000 in the USA!
