Part 2 of our BVI vacation begins Sunday, April 28, after we sadly leave our little sailboat and head for the ferry dock in Roadtown. We will be joined by another couple who will be with us at the villa on Virgin Gorda. The six of us take Speedy's Ferry to Spanishtown where we are met by Cecil of Hertz with our rental car. We have to have a station wagon to accommodate all six of us and our luggage. We are staying at a villa at Leverick Bay. Cecil actually makes the ride over the mountain to Leverick Bay with some of our luggage in his pick up truck. We get to Leverick Bay resort around 6 p.m. and get the keys to our villa, Sea Dream. Sea Dream is a lovely 3 bedroom house with a private pool overlooking Leverick Bay. Our view is out to Mosquito Island and Drake's Anchorage and the entrance to North Sound by Prickly Pear Island.
Sunday night we decide to have dinner down at the Leverick Bay Resort at the Lighthouse (formerly Pusser's). Dinner is OK, nothing special. Back to our villa for a dip in the pool. It's been a long day so we all retire early and as I close my eyes I still feel the sensation of being on a boat. That sensation will stay with me for another day or so. We were awakened at 4:30 a.m. by a rooster. This will be our wake up call every morning during our stay.
Monday we all head over to Spanishtown to do some grocery shopping. First we go to Mad Dogs for lunch. Good BLT's, nice view and breeze while we eat lunch. Then on to shopping. Stopped in the Cash and Carry, but they require you to buy in bulk so we left and went to Supa Value near the airport. Fairly good selection there. Made our purchases and headed back to Leverick Bay for a swim in our pool. We can't get over the beautiful views and great breezes from our deck. We've all decided we really like this pace.
Tuesday morning we go down to the Leverick Bay Resort to do some laundry. After a week on the sailboat we have gone through all our clean clothes. The other couple with us decides to spend the day at the beach at Leverick Bay. It is small, but they have thatched cabanas for shade and a pool. They had lunch at the outdoor grill and said the hamburgers were great. That night no one could make a decision on where to go for dinner so we once again headed down to The Lighthouse for happy hour. We talked about going over to Saba Rock for dinner, but after all those chicken wings we once again just headed back to our villa.
Wed. morning up early to take our sailing friends to the ferry boat. They are headed back to Texas. We stop into the commissary at Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor for coffee and croissants and walk around and look at the boats, then back to our villa to make the big decision of what to do that day. Decide to drive over to Gun Creek and take the ferry to Saba Rock. Get to Saba Rock around ll:00 but they aren't really open for the day yet. We can get beers, so we just look around the resort for awhile, drink our beer, make a reservation for dinner, then the ferry driver takes us over to the Fat Virgin at Biras Creek for lunch. Have lunch (good burgers) and drinks, then radio the Saba Rock ferry driver. He comes and picks us up and takes us over to Bitter End. Spend some time walking around Bitter End, then take their ferry back to Gun Creek. Stop at the grocery in Gun Creek. Very nice and well stocked. Buy a few things then back over to Leverick Bay for a swim and get ready for dinner. After coktails back to Gun Creek for the Saba Rock ferry. Saba Rock offers a buffet every night at their restaurant ($25.00). If you don't want the buffet you can order off the regular menu. Three of us got the buffet and one ordered fish off the menu. The buffet is really quite good as buffets go, leg of lamb, roast beef, pork loin roast, ribs, chicken, and very good salads. After dinner headed over to the bar to listen to steel drum band then back home on the ferry.
Thursday we decide to go to the Baths early to beat the crowd, but as usual we have trouble getting out early (despite the rooster). Make it to Mad Dogs for lunch again, then walk down to the Baths around 2:00. It's fairly crowded, but by 3:00 most people are gone and the vendors close up. Snorkeled and swam a bit then walked up to the Top of the Baths for a swim in their pool and cold drinks. The guys decide to go and hike the Devil's Trail, and we stay by the pool and have drinks. Later we change clothes and drive to the copper mine. What a beautiful spot, waves breaking over the rocks. We had never visited this spot before. Back to the Mine Shaft for sunset and dinner. Dinner was OK, service was great. Then back to our villa for a swim.
Friday, pack up to do a day at Savannah Bay. Snorkeling, swimming, lying on the beach with the roosters and cows. What a hoot. Cook dinner in our villa that night. We never get tired of those views.
Saturday morning our Pennsylvania friends leave for home and we have one day to be by ourselves. After dropping them at the ferry we go to the Flying Iguana at the airport for breakfast. Puck makes us delicious breadfast sandwiches which we enjoy with coffee, breezes, and views. We make a reservation for dinner and decide to do some exploring of Virgin Gorda. We like to go down all the little back roads and see anything off the beaten track. This doesn't take too long, so it's back to Sea Dream for one last day to enjoy the villa. Dinner our last night at the Flying Iguana was very good. After dinner we went out to our car to find a flat tire (exploring those back roads?), but Sean, a local we had met at the bar came out and helped us change it.
Sunday morning we leave to catch the 8:00 ferry. Over the mountain one last time. The first trip over the mountain last Sunday, we thought we had made a mistake staying in Leverick Bay, but after making the trip once or twice it is a piece of cake. The views are awesome and it really only takes about 15 minutes to get to Spanishtown. Cecil at Hertz told us to just leave the car at the fery dock with the keys in it! We had to take Speedy's Ferry to Raodtown, then taxi to West End, then Smith's Ferry to Charlotte Amalie. Next time I think we will try to fly into Virgin Gorda.
