Not to minimize all the hard work that needs to be done, and what the residents are still going through. But at least as a tourist destination, New Orleans is open for business and welcoming visitors with open arms.
I had the pleasure of spending this past weekend there for Jazz Fest, as well as a milestone anniversary of my graduation from a local college. Used to be, I'd mention my alumna status, and interactions warmed up because I had a connection to the city other than as a plain old tourist. Now, it's the out-of-towners who get the full-on welcome, because New Orleanians WANT and NEED you to visit their city.
I will provide a proper trip report later, as I'm still recovering from a weekend of fantastic weather, great music, unbelieveable food, not enough sleep, and relaxed inhibitions (with the credit card, that is....). But suffice to say that if you've ever wanted to visit this city (or return), you can do so without hesitation.
