My understanding from talking to local business people during our trip is that Memorial Day marks the beginning of "in season". We found light/moderate crowds in mid May at the popular spots and some of the people said we timed our visit perfectly for both weather and crowds. Not sure when the end of the season is, but I would guess Labor Day.
