So far, I don't see the story online, but a new sports bar has opened at Simpson Bay Resort, in the Marina area, with both indoor and outdoor seating. Half price drinks and food until June 21. Sounds like a good alternative to watching games at a casino in the Simpson Bay area. SBR seems to be upping their game quite a bit of late. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Clapping.gif" alt="" />

I hope it's a replacement to the Mexican Restaurant. It was ok, but would be a much better place for something like that!!!!

Unless it is in a different area, it does sound like it could be replacing the Mexican restaurant.

I don't know whether we will get there this time, but I personally am very interested in checking out the Mexican Restaurant. It is a new concept for SXM. The sports bar there is possibly where The Stone used to be?

People in our group that ate there liked it. I thought their margarita ($10) was one of the best I have had to date.

It was very good, just not super busy in March. I think it's the old location of the "very old Pelican Steak house". And the margaritas were very good!

You are correct. As an owner that is what we were told. We won't see it for ourselves until February.

Yes, the Mexican restaurant is there, and after that, it was El Gaucho, I think. The Stone was further down the Marina than that.

We ate at La Petrona in March. Breakfast buffet (freebie for attending the owner's update and Dinner one night. Both were very nice, though I would not call it "authentic" Mexican as promoted. The new bar was being built out in March and is where the Stone was and the spaces adjacent to it.

Friends had breakfast at LaPatrona and indicated it was one of the best on the island. I guess it is "different" Mexican than most are accustomed to.

If I recall correctly, in the early 90's (our first trip was in 93) there was a Mexican restaurant on the road behind the runway on the was to Mary's Boon. Think it was in the same building where the infamous Banda Bing is. For the life of me, I can't remember the name, but I do remember eating there.

I recall the place you're talking about, but can't think of the name now.

With regard to my previous post, to clarify, the new restaurant at SBR is more AUTHENIC Mexican, versus American Mexican food, which is totally different.

Here are pictures posted by SBR http://www.simpsonbayresortnews.com/simpson-bay-resort/replay-sports-pub-opening-day/

It is in the same strip as the Stone but I believe to the left (facing the building) I think it was where they they had the short lived gelato shop. I am actually quite impressed what they have done with the layout of the "marina".

this thread caught my eye so I checked out the menu. do they really only have ceviche on the lunch menus? the lunch menu seems more islandy to me. for those who have been there, what do you say? thank you. (lack of plantain was a bit surprising)

Had a drink there this afternoon while watching a proper football match. Nice enough. A lot of employees standing around doing nothing.

They sure do. I normally detest Mexican food but I LOVE La Patrona. These guys know what they are doing. This is the full story (from the next SXM Weekly News):

St. Maarten's newest sports bar, Replay Sports Pub, has just opened its doors and is inviting the general public to visit and enjoy their favorite games. Replay Sports Pub is welcoming future patrons with 2-for-1 drinks and half-priced food items until June 21. The Grand Opening kicked off with the much anticipated NBA Finals, in the presence of management and almost all guests of Simpson Bay Resort & Marina, where the bar is housed. DJ Ridge and his team hosted the event, which included dancing, unique cocktails including signature drink "MVP", and must-have sports eats such as wings, burgers, loaded sandwiches, and the star dish, Chilli Bean Nachos. The bar includes both indoor and outdoor seating, and is plastered with sports memorabilia and life-size images of athletic icons. Located at the resort's Marina Plaza, Replay Sports Pub features expert mixologist Ivan, opens every day at 12 noon and closes when the game ends.

Carol, you will love Patrona. Everything was created by Mexicans with Julieta Sanchez Sutton as GM. Really delicious stuff, especially Tampico Chicken, and I don't usually go for Mexican food. Super spicy to not at all spicy... get it as you want it. We became regulars pretty quick. BTW their pizza is outstanding too - served during the day. We get it to go.

Exactly. it is real Mexican, not Tex-Mex. Nobody else comes close.

La Patrona was awful in my opinion. For example, the cheese dip was hard and you had to use a knife to cut it. It seemed very similar to mozzarella instead of a creamy white cheese like most US restaurants have. Ate there once for lunch and once for dinner and did not like any of our dishes.

Again, it is true Mexican, versus Tex-Mex, so totally different than what most Americans are used to. If we do go there, will post a review.

was it actually described as a "dip"?...sounds like it could have been queso fundido/flameado, which is a thicker melted white cheese (coaxaca, mozzarella, etc), usually with chorizo or other meat on top, that is scooped up on put into tortillas to make a "taco", (or i guesss you can eat it with chips)....love it when i can get it

On their menu, they have an appetizer which is just described as "melted cheese--The perfect combination of melted cheese served with handmade corn tortillas." Comes plain or with mushrooms or Chorizo.

We are going to try it this trip, I think. Sounds like maybe Cathy and Danny were expecting more Tex-Mex.
