Anyone hear how Nanny Cay and Sea Cow Bay did? Saw one post that said Nanny Cay did "fairly" well.

The only info I've seen was from Gina at Swain Sailing (I've also been in touch with her, they manage our boat, which is fortunately in Newport RI right now). The update she got was that things weren't too bad, but I believe that was all during the eye of the storm. I saw another post (no idea how reliable) that some boats were piled on top of each other..

So until something new comes in, I'd expect the worst and hope for the best. Things could have changed when the winds changed.

I still can't believe all the damage and wish we could do more to help.

Since "Zanshin" is/was/might still be at Nanny Cay I'd love to get information as well. I'll let the folks at Nanny Cay get their things sorted out before asking them. Was Rob at Nanny Cay during the storm?

I don't know if Rob was there or not. If I hear anything, I'll let you know.

I got this post from a fellow sailor who had their boat at Nanny Cay last season: "Just found out Nanny Cay all boats on hard blown over, they don t tie down alot of their boats, Most of the boats in the water there piled up, destroyed, Moorings took a hard hit, Village Cay Boats Destroyed too, looks like anything that was in the water destroyed."

I just got this too, "Lots of direct reports from people who live near Nanny Cay, to Brittany Meyers that total extensive damage to Nanny Cay and most of the yachts there."

Hoping for the best, my boat, and all boats around me had sand screws/tiedowns. The lack of tangible information is frustrating, but understandable.

hallucination - I had Nanny Cay put in tie-downs and sand screws as well. But I guess it is going to be a domino-effect - if one goes over then they all do.

I'll play the Schrödinger's cat game -- "Zanshin" is alive and well while being dead and gone at the same time ---- until I get a picture or note which slams the quantum door closed. smile

Of course that is supposing that Hurricane José doesn't decide to follow in Irma's destructive footsteps

The following FB post seems to be very positive, however I am VERY skeptical as it contradicts so many others:

I saw that one earlier and decided not to believe it (completely), either; but miracles have happened before...

Here's a post that is probably much more accurate:

The words would make some sense or at least be possible. Every inch away from the water the more protected and in the lee from the North Winds on the front end of the storm. Look at the Moorings Dinghy shed. The slips are wrecked by just a few feet away the dinghies appear fine as least in the early pictures. The boats all tied tightly together exposed to the Sir Francis Drake Channel surge I have had doubts since I saw the pre storm pictures.

Some pictures just were posted to the "BVI Abroad - Hurricane Irma" facebook page. It looks like the Nanny Cay boatyard is a total loss. Many boats piled up, some upside down, clear holes in the hulls... very sorry to be the bearer of bad news. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Sad.gif" alt="" />

If anyone can repost any photos of Sea Cows Bay would be appreciated. Our boat was there and have no work yet. Cannot see how she could have survived this ...still nice to see some photos. Thanks, Jim

Can't find any. But it was described to me as a pond. there are no docks, no boats, all piers are gone. All the boats are "over there".

an aside, Beef Island airport is a pancake.

I posted a link to some photos of Sea Cows Bay about three posts before you. Here's the link again.

Arnt, a rig at 45 is better than no rig. I think BVI will become a "powercat" charter place for a while. if you could get masts, who would install?

Amazing. Now there's some good news! Seems there are at least a handful of boats at Nanny Cay that made it through basically unscathed.

Providing same link, but in clickable format.

You can't trust everything you are hearing. I heard Leverick docks were gone, tower at the airport as well. Neither is true. Heavy damage at Leverick with the buildings at the end of the dock gone, but the docks are still there. Airport tower is there too, although probably damaged.

I also heard Quito's was gone, but a photo I saw this morning only shows the deck gone and some damage.

I'm shocked at the amount of absolute rubbish people are putting out. Obviously fake reports, and I was watching videos of purported Irma damage to St. John online _before_ Irma had even reached the BVI. People posting about a CAT & hurricane and spreading faked NOAA charts online.

There will always be a couple of people who get a thrill by doing this, but the sheer volume of misrepresented pictures, texts and videos makes it difficult to sort out the ones which are correct.

I'm glad that the loss of life has remained low, with a storm of this magnitude it might have been much worse; so evidently the preparations of shelters and storm warnings/plans was as good as could be expected when
just surviving a direct hit by a category 5 hurricane can be considered a success.

I think a lot of the confusion is because as the eye passed over many pictures were posted of damage before the backside hit and the real damage started. As Zanshin said however there are always a few who like to spread a little misery to others and fabricate or blow things out of proportion.

I suspect a lot of sailing cats are going to be motored to Puerto Rico for repairs. There are no real facilities left in the BVI.

Here's picture of Nanny Cay from a helicopter:

"Zanshin" is just off the picture to the right, so I'm still unsure of her fate.

Which one is yours in that? I can't tell from looking at it above. And I can't believe it is on land since you said it was in the water, right?

FYI, Rob swain checked in yesterday.

There is a large update on FB BVI Abroad by Cameron McColl,
Chairman Nanny Cay Resort & Marina Ltd. looks like they have staff on site and are moving boats. You might be able to get a status on boats Soon.
