Someone in another post in a different thread said they are charging $20 for 2 chairs and an umbrella. I don't think they are throwing in the chairs for free. That would not be a good business tactic.

From what I saw when I walked by one day last week, it was basically $20 for 2 chairs and an umbrella and included a drink. They may have termed it to be $10 each for a chair with free umbrella but the bottom line was $20 for a set and included a drink. Not sure if it was 1 drink per chair or set. Beers were 2 for $5 and they also had soda and I think a limited mixed drink selection. They had just a few sets of chairs rented.
Bikini charged $30 for a set of padded chairs and umbrella. We took a cooler, as did several other guests and at one point the beach guy told me it was "forbidden" to have our own drinks as it would "force them to close the restaurant". He said he would make an "exception" this time. I told him 3 of the 4 of us were going to eat there and for $30 for the chairs he should not have a problem with a few drinks from our own cooler. Others behind us that spoke French and had a large white styrofoam cooler were not given the same lecture that I could tell.

Correct, same here. We might take some snacks but 3 of the 4 of us ate and had a drink at the restaurant. I was driving so it was a total of 3 beers early on and then none after that.

I was not told there were separate operations, perhaps they are but nowhere did I say that or imply that. I was just relaying the beach guys "threat" when he saw me get a can out of the cooler. Like I also said, there was a couple (French speaking) in the row behind us drinking out of a white styrofoam cooler. Nothing was said to them and I never saw them order any food or drink from Bikini.

I know it does seem unfair, but this is nothing new. It has always been the case to not allow coolers on the beach when there is a beach bar there. Even Karakter does not allow coolers and I think they have a sign stating this. When we wanted to bring coolers, we always brought our own chairs and moved to a more secluded area to enjoy our day. The Club O beach always allowed coolers with no problem, but I think they were an exception.

Actually, I don't think that was the 'rule' before at all. MANY places have always allowed coolers to be brought, including Bikini PRE Irma.. Karakter does not charge for chairs at all if you eat and/or drink there. That's totally different.

The difference being, they do not charge for a "set" at Karakter. When we go there we do not take a cooler and we purchase everything from them since they do not charge for the loungers. Different story at Bikini and I have taken a cooler there for 20+ years.
Also odd that it was not "forbidden" for the French speaking couple.

It was always what I was told by the people that owned the beach bars. I even remember you were told that by a beach bar close by there and you said you would never go back. It has always been discouraged and there have been many posts here in the past discussing this.

Elizabeth--that was at Coco at Esmeralda. I vowed I would never go back there, and I have not. The OTHER beach bars on Orient have always allowed coolers, as far as I know. It's been a very long time since we were at Kontiki also, so not sure about them, but Bikini and Kakao always allowed coolers. And Friars Bay Beach Club allowed coolers, as of last June, post Irma. And of course you have Mullet, where you can bring your cooler, in addition to Club O beach, and all the small beach bars on Orient allowed it also.
