My young nephew grew up primarily on chicken nuggets and fries, however we tricked him into eating fried yucca at sweet plantains once, he thought they were the real deal with catsup! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Grin.gif" alt="" />

McDonald's is the last thing any place needs, St John or otherwise. It may be cheap, but its crap.

Too funny! As a kid, living in Grenada, I LOVED going to St. Thomas because they had a McDonalds! It was always the highlight of the trip. I have to admit though as an adult I would be bummed to see the neon lights of McDonalds on St. John. Glad it was a hoax.

I remember there was a McDs on the main drag not far from the Windward Passage hotel (late 70s). I have never been a McDs fan, but they had Conch Fritters and Heineken on the menu. That is when I knew the VI would be favorite place for years to come.

Why is it needed?? Uhmn, I don't know, is it possible that the locals want it?? On the few occasions that I have been in a fast food joint anywhere in the Caribbean, 90% of the people who are eating there are locals. There is a HUGE!! KFC in Montego Bay Jamaica, on a road not far from the airport. We drove past it last fall, and there were huge crowds around it, the huge majority of which appeared to be locals to me. I don't know if our taxi driver was correct, but he said that it was the highest selling KFC in the WORLD. Just sayin.

People like cheap food - maybe KFC is the cheapest chicken in Jamaica?
Are there no other places on St. John to get a burger and fries?

I'm sure there are other places on ST. John to get a burger and fries, yes, but possibly not as cheap, and strange as it may sound, some people actually like the taste of McDonald's burgers. I'm not one of them, but my point is that Micky Dee's isn't a stupid organization. IF they build one there, and I don't have any idea if this is really real or not, it could well be because they believe that locals will eat there. Based on my very limited experience with fast food other places in the Caribbean, they could be right.

Sure glad this was just a hoax or a poor practical joke. However, I will go on record saying there are some establishments that just do not belong in certain places The McDonalds at the base of the Rock of Gibraltar is totally out of place. The KFC as you exit The Great Sphinx of Giza also falls into that category. Maybe one day a Walmart could be located next to the Lincoln Memorial. The tourist on the mall may love it. But each one of the examples cited, real or imaginary, are not in character to the place. STJ, for the most part has been able, to defend itself from the large chains (Hotel, Food, timeshare companies, etc...)that have overrun many of the islands. McDonalds would be the harbinger of things going bad. of course IMHO...

How about for the health of those living on St. John? Maybe it tastes good, maybe its cheap, but there's no arguing it is incredibly bad for you. A regular burger at any other place that serves it on St. John would be far better. Hard to comment on the starbucks as I'm not familiar with your neighborhood, but apparently the end of your street is not residential.

sail445 said: Mc Donald's also uses worms as a filler to their burger and Kentucky Fried Chicken changed their name to KFC because they produced a genetically modified chicken that has 2 sets of thighs and drum sticks and 2 sets of wings per bird, the birds don't have feet or beaks. So they can NOT say its chicken. People thought they didn't want to say the F word in their name "Fried" so it worked out for them until now. Can't believe everything you read on the internet.. http://www.snopes.com/horrors/food/wormburger.asphttp://www.snopes.com/food/tainted/kfc.aspThat being said though, the quality of their beef and chicken is awful by comparison to good meat.

I agree - We can still comment on how we feel about it though, which is all we're doing here. If the locals want to eat crap, so be it. They'll end up with the same health issues more and more people in the states face.

I confess I haven't read everything in this thread ahead of my comments, as I have been out of the country, but I felt that point should be made, that it's not up to us to decide what is best for the island and whether we should 'protect' them from themselves, as it were....
