Vessels over 55 feet in length or over 35 tons are not allowed to use any regular mooring, but they can use the larger yellow buoys, which are 18 inches in diameter. The above is for national park moorings. I believe moor secure also has a weight limit. G

OP CottageGirl Traveler Joined: Jun 2014 Posts: 1,125 Petoskey, MI	So - hypothetically - IF you were dreaming of plans in the future to buy a say 50' boat and you wanted to be sure you could use the mooring balls in the BVI's, how could you confirm the ball will hold your boat? Also does anyone have a rec on a website that has info on annual cost of boat ownership (general info) - not putting the boat in charter.

If you are talking a 50 foot monohull sailboat you will be well within the weight limits for NPS or overnight balls. Cost to keep the boat has so many varibles it's hard to quantify. In our case a 53 foot monohull kept in the water 9 months a year was going to run 28 to 30k a year. G

Spend a summer on the boat exploring up here. Then the following year take the boat ourselves down south and explore for 5-6 months. Power, not sail most likely. Again it's a big DREAM but you never know what's possible till you explore it all. Will check out the links. Thanks again!!
