Does anyone know what the boat/yacht weight limit is on the mooring balls in the BVI's? Or is there one?

They usually rate the mooring balls by length of the boat, 60' is the max

There is a 90-minute time limit on all moorings, and use is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Vessels over 55 feet in length or over 35 tons are not allowed to use any regular mooring, but they can use the larger yellow buoys, which are 18 inches in diameter.

The above is for national park moorings. I believe moor secure also has a weight limit.

So - hypothetically - IF you were dreaming of plans in the future to buy a say 50' boat and you wanted to be sure you could use the mooring balls in the BVI's, how could you confirm the ball will hold your boat?
Also does anyone have a rec on a website that has info on annual cost of boat ownership (general info) - not putting the boat in charter.

I ran extensive numbers on doing just that last year. If you are talking a 50 foot monohull sailboat you will be well within the weight limits for NPS or overnight balls.
Cost to keep the boat has so many varibles it's hard to quantify. In our case a 53 foot monohull kept in the water 9 months a year was going to run 28 to 30k a year.

CottageGirl, TackingAg's survey is a good starting point.

Survey results at:

Generally, unless you can use the boat 8 weeks a year or do fractional ownership, charter is cheaper.

Thanks everyone! Dreaming 6-7 yrs down the road after my husband retires. Big dream is to buy up in the Great Lakes area. Spend a summer on the boat exploring up here. Then the following year take the boat ourselves down south and explore for 5-6 months. Power, not sail most likely. Again it's a big DREAM but you never know what's possible till you explore it all.
Will check out the links.
Thanks again!!
