Anybody have a good Mint Jelly Recipe? - 06/17/2009 05:47 PM

I planted some mint about 4 years ago in LI...
Now it's everywhere, smells great around the deck...
and is great, crushed, in fresh iced tea...
But I'm looking for a good Mint Jelly Recipe...
Anybody have a favorite?

Gotta have Mint Jelly with my Lamb... and I'd like to try to make my own...
I have done a lot of Strawberry & Peach Prserves in the past, and have a lot of Ball Jars in the basement...
I haven't found one yet that I really like on the internet yet...

Oh NO!!! Not mint JELLY with lamb! Gotta have mint sauce! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/jester.gif" alt="" />
That's fresh mint, chopped, in a vinegar based sauce. That's the way my Nana always served it. The British way.

Oooooo... That I would like! Nana's Recipe???
we have enough fresh mint now to serve the entire Brittish Empire!
Our woods here in NJ are also filled with it...

She never wrote it down, unfortunately. The basic recipe is:

Bunch of fresh mint leaves, chopped (about 1/4 cup)
1/3 Cup boiling water
1 or 2 Tbsp. sugar, depending on how sweet you like your sauce.
Stir together to dissolve sugar & cool slightly.
Stir in:
1/3 Cup cider or white vinegar
Salt & pepper to taste.

Serve warm with roasted lamb.

I have a big pot of mint on my patio. It comes back every year & I never have to do anything but water it and pinch it back a bit. I learned to never plant mint in a garden since it takes over everything!

Much better than mint jelly, in my opinion! I always cringe when I'm served jelly with lamb in a restaurant. Way too sweet!

I've also made stuffed rolled leg of lamb on the grill with mint leaves, parsley, & lots of garlic. Delish!

If I had to eat one red meat it would be lamb. I have fond memories of my Nonna making lamb with lots of mint and LOTS of garlic. OMG....the aromas are forever cemented in my memory bank! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/cry.gif" alt="" /> Don't remember mint jelly but hey, it's the garlic/mint combo that's fantastic!! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Clapping.gif" alt="" />
