Long pants needed anywhere on VG? and Giorgio's ?

Long pants needed anywhere on VG? and Giorgio's ? - 10/24/2015 06:21 PM

We'll be returning to VG in November and family will be joining us so just wanted to check if anywhere still requires long pants for dinner.

Also, has Giorgio's reopened anywhere?

Highly unlikely. Don't know about Georgios, but not necessary anywhere else.

I think Georgio has opened in Road Town on Main Street

I remember asking the long pants restaurant question once after being rebuffed at the only place on Tortola that required them ( then smartly dropped the rule).
" Are long pants required?", asked I. The very Scottish reply came:
"If you have cash or credit card you are properly attired!"

You will need long pants at night at Little Dix Bay for dinner ..

Indeed it was " Skyworld" after the great Warren Mc Kenna sold it..short lived under that owner.Warren is still greatly missed down here in Little Apple Bay where he built our home and others back in 1969..

From the Rosewood site for the Sugar Mill.

Dress Code:
Gentlemen are required to wear long slacks, a collared shirt and closed-toe shoes.

I don't think so when I can go to several other equal to or better dining spots on VG and be much more relaxed.

Boy, I read this wrong! Long pants are required to minimize mosquito bites.

Try Coco Maya as a great alternative to LDB - much better

Not hardly. So I guess ladies have to wear slacks as well?

We have found our presence is much more welcome when we get off the boat reasonably shaved and sporting shirts with collars. The males in our group generally fly wearing a pair of long pants that travel well and show few wrinkles. Hang them as soon as you are on the boat. In most cases you will find a second pair of full khaki, linen, or canvas pants on the bottom of the duffle. We always have a blazer on in any airport. After 5 we always find it best to wear a full shoe ashore. Do you have to have any of that NO. Will many treat you better for it. You Bet. One hint. Take notice of the staff serving you. When you are not dressed at least at the same level as the staff expected to wait on you there is a level of selfish disrespect assumed by many. In the caribbean, Always leave all the denim at home. The owners welcome you for you $$$, each staff member will have their own measure of the man or woman.

I agree lovie.... True if on Peter Island. Don't forget your blazer MUST have an emblem of some sort as that way those servers of society will amp their attention up even more.

Seriously, you just can't make this sh*t up. Wouldn't be surprised if it is cut and pasted from somewhere.

Re: Long pants needed anywhere on VG? and Giorgio's ? - 10/30/2015 10:57 PM

StormJib is great at cut and paste but there are a few places where a jacket and slacks do help. Especially on VG. I went into Chez Bamboo once in a nice Columbia fishing shirt, shorts and white Topsiders. I was the only person NOT in a sports coat and definitely got the feeling that I was "second class" in where they sat me and how they served me. I doubt I will be back.

Re: Long pants needed anywhere on VG? and Giorgio's ? - 10/31/2015 02:06 AM

No thanks. I'd rather people believe me to be low class than wear a blazer while traveling. I'm not going to make air travel any more uncomfortable than it already is to impress others. You are of course free to wear a tuxedo if it pleases you.

We've gone to Chez Bamboo every trip for the past four years, sometimes twice per, and I'm always wearing shorts, uncollared cotton shirt, and sandals. Never felt anything but totally welcomed. Same for The Rock, Coco Maya, Leverick, etc.

us too, the only reason I bring jeans is because it's freezing in Colorado and on the plane. They get stored until the trip home.

We did a trans Atlantic cruise this spring. A jacket was required for "formal nights". So I got one at a local thrift store for $3; used it twice and left it on the ship.

Agree...we,too have been to these places and found neat casual wear is fine. Just wondered about LDB currently...as I recall collared shirts and long pants, and no jacket needed.

I frequent Chez Bamboo and frankly have never seen anyone in a sport coat. Not sure why the service was not top notch, that is unfortunate because it is not the norm. I do not believe it has to do with your manner of dress, rather a new staff member that is probably not there any longer.

I hope Brian is right, but I agree with you Rick, the humor escapes me. Chez Bamboo is one of the top restaurants on the island along with Leverick and Coca Maya.
In fact, all of Rose's restaurants are top notch - Bath & Turtle and Rendesvous Bar included.
There is no requirement to wear a jacket. Never has been. Rose and her staff have become friends over the years. She is exceptional as are Sharon and Leon. To suggest otherwise is completely wrong and offensive. This is their living. Distorting the truth just isn't funny.
Glenn, I hope this was a mistake that you will correct.

Re: Long pants needed anywhere on VG? and Giorgio's ? - 11/06/2015 08:08 PM

Unfortunately it was not. This was in February, 2010 while I was on VG researching the geology book. There were several couples in the main dining area all in sports coats and cocktail dresses. The matre'd sat me in the far corner of the room on the left where no other customers were seated and left me for about 20 minutes. I will not go into the service here but the filet of sole in parchment was excelent.

It may have been a private party in the main room. I don't know, but the experience left a bad taste in my mouth. In 12 years on TTOL this is the only negative comment I have made about any restaurant.

Dont dis the Prof..if Glenn says this happened to him then it did..if that happened to me I would not be happy either..bad things happen in good establishments all the time..dont shoot the messenger..

Re: Long pants needed anywhere on VG? and Giorgio's ? - 11/06/2015 09:41 PM

Well, I am really sorry that happened. It must have been a private party because jackets and dresses are just not part of the normal attire.
Rose and her staff are truly wonderful. Hope you can give them another try.
Your comments were in sharp contrast to your usual informative commentary. That's why it stung.
We will be down at the end of the month and look forward to our traditional Thanksgiving dinner with Rose and her staff.
Mal, I have no idea if you have ever been there and our tastes are certainly different, but not once in dozens upon dozens of meals have they ever disappointed. I'm not sure that I can make that statement about any other restaurant.
I really hate to see such a fine establishement criticized by someone as respected as Glenn. If nothing else, it was most certainly an anomaly.

No one is "dissin" anyone just saying that his is a rare experience based on all who have never experienced that. Definitely a RARE occurrence for Chez Bamboo. IF it had been one of your frequent haunts you would have likely responded in the same manner.

Re: Long pants needed anywhere on VG? and Giorgio's ? - 11/08/2015 02:03 AM

As we always go to the Carribean in August, there's no way my husband would wear long pants. It's just too darn hot. Also, as he has to wear a jacket and tie to work every day (alright, actually a judge's robe and a tie), there's no way he's dressing up on vacation. We've eaten lunch at Little Dix Bay, but skipped eating dinner there, due to this requirement.

You certainly can get away will all kinds of stuff on this earth. Some countries are more flexible than others. The grooming and appearance of the working staff is a good indicator of the most appropriate attire for the location. We prefer to appear like we belong wherever we go. There is always one pair of light long pants that travel well at the bottom of the bag and a blazer somewhere. Off the boat we shave, comb our hair, and put on a shirt with a collar anywhere near sundown.

Some folks wear long pants to fend off mosquitoes and in the winter, it is too cold for shorts at night.

That's exactly what he's saying so that he and his group will receive the appropriate service level based on their attire. Apparently we don't frequent the "higher end" foodservice establishments as we are always well received wearing shorts, sandals, no collar shirt, and for me very likely unshaven.

Re this: Dennis and Mary, new owners of " The Sugar Mill", prefer ladies to wear a nice sundress and men to have a collared shirt in the upstairs restaurant at night..not a hard and fast rule but that is their preference..I wear an Aloha shirt or golf shirt, clean short and flip flops and that is fine.

I have no problem with any of that. A blazer, I just can't see, in the Caribbean.. Or at least, anywhere that I would want to be.
