I think St. John is the best for snorkeling and hiking! There's not much in the way of nightlife but totally worth the hassle of clearing in/out of customs if you're looking for a place to get back to nature and relax.
Favorite snorkel spots on St. John are Great Lameshur (the old Tektite research spot), Salt Pond and Leinster. The Ram's Head hike from Salt Pond is amazing. You can also access some great hikes from Lameshur. It takes about an hour to get to the Reef Bay petroglyphs. You can also hike to Coral Bay from Leinster if you want to hit Skinny Legs for lunch.
