Being cautious is not living in fear, it's just common sense about your safety. When I was a search-and-rescue crewman in the USCG we often heard "...we've been doing it for years and we never had a problem!" from people we rescued. It only takes one bad time to be sorry you did it.
Always, better safe than sorry!!
