Your best option and while not a good one may be to show up at the airport and try to go as standby or get on whatever is available. You can not rely on what phone agents, counter agents or the websites indicate, I have been through it personally several times earlier this week. The best luck I had was continually checking Delta's site and on occasion a date would open up. I am on United's site right now and it is showing seats to EWR today.
