We've made that drive about five times now. Once you get out of Cancun and past Playa del Carmen it is pretty uneventful. It is a long trek, however, five to six hours. We like to break it up with an overnight in Tulum on one end or the other. If you have a week or more, it's well worth the trip.
Mak Nuk Village in Tulum is a great stop over...not at all rustic, though!
