Hey all,

I'm looking at flights to STT or EIS for late December from Boston. I typically book my flights in October, so I was expecting/hoping for similar or less expensive flights booking further out... Not the case! Flights are very expensive and none of the non-stop's I usually book are available.

Am I trying to book too early? Is something going on I'm not aware of?

Thanks!
Drew

Late December is the most expensive time of year to fly to the islands. Is that when you were booking in the past? You might try going out on 24 or 25 Dec and back on 31 or I Jan. Every flight will be full so discounts few and far between.

Yeah, I usually fly down Dec 27, 28. Same dates this year and it is a couple hundred dollars more at least! Also, the flights are all with connections and typically I'm flying direct.

I just checked and last year I booked on 10/5. A one-way direct on jet blue was $266. Right now, a month earlier and the same flight is $534.

I just looked at jetblue and there's 3 direct flights for $269 on the 28th and one on the 27th.

Matt, you must get special JetBlue pricing!

I see one for 300+ if you want to arrive 9AM the NEXT day!

Oh.. You know, I just looked to SJU. I misread the original post..

Try using Google Flights to find the best price. I used it to book for my November trip and found a fare well under the best price listed on AA.com. When I went to book the flight, Google Flights took me to AA.com to purchase. I looked at Expert Flyer (paid subscription that is well worth it!) and knew the lower price flights were available (different fare bucket).

My new go-to for booking flights!

We are going Thanksgiving week and the flights were $800 from Atlanta, $1200 from New York, and $1500 from San Francisco (mixed cabin.) Man, we must love BVI :P

The 27th and 28th are probably the two highest cost dates to leave. The week prior to Xmas you can fly round trip for under 500. Leaving on 27 or 28 at least 1000. Everything will be sold out so they are not going to discount. If you can push your departure back to Friday prices drop rapidly. Last year the 27th fell on Sunday Christmas weekend. I suspect demand was much lower accounting for the price change.

Best way to book is with flexibility.. We are flying to St. Lucia in October to move our boat to the BVI (I'm sure we'll have a great trip report as BEERMAN is along for the voyage) and I had some flexibility in when we got down there - big savings by us arriving on a Tuesday.. $600 one way total for 3 of us.
