We usually go from DFW to EIS but the airfare in May, 2017 is CRAZY. So we are booking to STT and return. The question is this:
We only have 45 minutes for a layover in Miami. Is this enough time to get thru customs? Or do we only go thru customs in St. Thomas? Thanks all

You don't go through C&I when traveling from the US mainland to a US posession. You will clear into the BVI at West End or Road Town.

Assuming this is your return, you clear customs at STT airport. But Miami is a huge airport, depending on where you sit on the plane, you might lose 15 minutes before you are ever off the aircraft.

Glen is correct with regard to inbound. Buy if you mean outbound, similar reply. There is no C/I as it is considered a domestic to domestic connection.

If the connection is shown on the airline booking site then it meets the "legal minimum connecting time" requirement. In the old days, connection times were published in the OAG, Airline GDS still have that info. If in doubt call the airline and ask if the connection meets the minimum connecting time. Minimums take into consideration airlines, domestic to domestic, domestic to international, and reverse situations.

This also assumes the travel is on the same ticket, checked baggage. Two separate tickets with checked bags presents an entirely different situation.

What is CRAZY is buying a May 2017 ticket this far in advance! The airlines don't have fare sales six months in advance. Besides, May is not a peak season or holiday time. No reason for you to worry about flights being full. Look at flights and then check seat maps, you'll see wide open seats -meaning that very few tickets have been actually been sold.

No way in the world would I buy this ticket this far in advance. 90-60 days will be when you will see some realistic fares. Use Kayak and set a fare tracking tool to watch airfare from city pairs.

We did 45 minutes at MIA on the last trip and made it - just barely. We had to take a tram between terminals even though it was an AA-AA connection. When we arrived at our gate, the flight was boarding - didn't even have time to stop and buy a salad for the flight.

Checked bags also made it, which was a pleasant surprise :P
