Can you recommend and direct us to bakeries where we can buy breakfast and sandwich rolls in the morning? We like to take our own lunches to the beach. Especially interested in Oyster Bay, Orient and points in between.

Two more days!

Also check out Yellow Sub/Macaroon in Orient Village, as well as Petit Casino in the Village.

The bakery in the French Quarter is amazing. It is across the street from the fruit and vegetable stall. It will be on your right coming from Oyster Pond. Wonderful pastries and many, many different kinds of breads. It is extremely popular with locals and visitors alike. Also, Good Morning in Orient Village has new ownership. I think the quality has diminished a bit.

The little Bakery in d'Orleans, on the corner of Rue de Coralita for sure!!!! They are nicest folks, with the best breads and sweets. We are there just about every morning when we are on the island.

Personally, I would not put a lot of faith in TripAdvisor ratings for St. Maarten/St. Martin or anywhere else for that matter.

The east coast? Of SXM? That's kind of a concept that I don't associate with SXM. Paradise View has a wonderful view, that's for sure! And if you love crepes, a good place to stop. I don't think that they sell takeaway breads or rolls though, which was the original poster's question?

We haven't been there for a while to eat, but I do remember years ago going there for dinner, when they had live entertainment and we had some kind of a fondue or something. It was lovely...

as a business owner, I could not disagree more. While there are some jerks posting inaccurate info, the large percentage are very credible reviews. We had a 2 star review that they did not like our Hummus, one problem, we do not carry Hummus. T.A. refused to take the review down, as it fell in their guidelines. Tripadvisor can break a company way quicker than it can make a company. I never book a hotel or resort without checking T.A's reviews. I am smart enough to blow off the whiners.

TripAdvisor is an interesting forum. I've read some great reviews and some very negative reviews and all referencing the same entity so you really do have to take them all with a grain of salt. Personally, I'd prefer a reference from someone known to me here on the TTOL forum or even on any of the Facebook groups before I'd take them (TA) too seriously as my prime source of reference.

The first time we went to Honolulu we were contemplating staying at a specific hotel but in reading the only TA review we could find we changed our mind and stayed elsewhere at a much higher cost. Come to find out, well after our trip, friends stayed there and loved it. Live and learn......

I agree with sail2wind. TA's Istanbul, Buenos Aires forums are excellent for good information. Long time posters on those forums, some who live there full time. No doubt there are village idiots on every board.

There are quite a few ttol people that live on island and contribute very useful and factual information on TA about St Maarten along with ttol visitors too.

Agreed, contributions from those who live on island are extremely valuable. Not sure anyone disputes that?

When Applebee's and other chains are rated above very good independent restaurants on TripAdvisor, I give them or the posters little credibility.

TripAdvisor is only as good the the people making the reviews and it is based on opinion.

And aren't opinions what most people post here too?

Yes, but they are not solicited like often happens on TripAdvisor. Furthermore, I don't agree with every review or opinion posted here with regards to restaurants. Some people tout their favorites and are rewarded for doing so.

And that so called reward doesn't happen with review posts on this forum? Everybody has their likes and dislikes and that is what makes both TA and ttol interesting and informative.

There is a chance it might on some occasions but you also have seasoned travelers who go to a place more than once.

Does Hertz reward you?

I am sorry, but when fast food places and the likes of Applebee's and other moderate chains find their way to the top of many TripAdvisor ratings, something is flawed.

TripAdvisor also approves posts before they appear to the public and they will remove negative posts. Places affiliated with TripAdvisor will often solicit your review. I have been asked more than once by merchants on the island and also elsewhere to write a review for TA.

"Does Hertz reward you?" Nope. Not even a thank you. Do sponsors pay to be on here to be recommended?

Have to agree with some of the posters above - Bruno's Bakery next to Yellow Sub is called Macaron, I think, & is fantastic. It is located in Orient Village. We also like the bakery in Orleans across from the produce stands.

Sponsors pay to advertise here, yes. That's what pays the bills, to keep the board going. At least we don't have those d*mn pop-up ads all over the place..

In addition, not all posts or reviews about sponsors are positive. While that would be ideal, it doesn't always happen.

This has been hilarious. Ask a question about bakeries, and get a wide ranging discussion about forums. Thanks to those who answered my question and thanks to those who made the string interesting.

See you all in SXM tomorrow!

Ditto! Not only is the food great but the view is so relaxing. Nothing like coffee & croissant and watching dingies come to pick up bread or a band climbing a mast to fix something---I know not what, Just that he;s way way up there swaying back & forth.
