Do you mean Bavaria? If so, yes and they have a great happy hour on Friday nights (outside bar only).

I'm a German and found that their meals are pretty close to the real thing - while the name is south German the menu is central German and quite authentic. I really liked their Sauerbraten smile

It took us ten years of annual visits to try Bavaria, because we always felt that German food was too heavy for a tropical climate. Now we know better!

Same here only closer to 20+ years before eating there and now I would not miss it. Had two meals there on the past 2 week trip.

I went there for the beer, fell in love with the place and now also get a meal or two there besides my stops to get a beer. Fantastic place, and fun on Friday nights at the outside bar.

Cheers,

I prefer the Isle seat

We have been going to SXM for more than 30 years. Had dinner here last year for the 1st time. Being from a "PA Dutch" family, I really loved the food and service as did my wife.
In conversation with owner, I asked how long had they been there. She said, 22 years. Wow, we have definitely added this place to our agenda.

I'll put in on my agenda for this Friday. Wow! Tomorrow already! Some of the folks at the Yacht Club head over there. Speaking of interesting places I went over to Rembrandt's Cafe the other day. Hadn't been there for over 20 years since before the hurricane that wiped out Dawn Beach. Nice place with lots of atmosphere and now a nice pool table.

Bavaria is the oldest restaurant still in business on the Dutch side. Marty's is second. That says a lot about both places!

Would have to be longer than 22 years - certain Rancho and Chesterfilds around more than 25 years maybe others that might come to mind or might not -lol

Bavaria -so many great German beers....

I don't know about the 22 years, but I do know that that the owner, whose name escapes me now, told us that their restaurant was the oldest on the Dutch side, and Marty confirmed that, saying his was the second-oldest. Not sure when either first opened.

Annette (from what I recall) is the female half of the ownership. I thought slightly more than 22 years also as I thought she told me 23 years 2-3 years ago.

I know it took me 20+ years to try them. Took some SXM veterans there this year and they enjoyed their first visit also.

L'Escargot Restaurant is more than 40 years old. I doubt if either of the prior named establishments approach that age. But, does it really matter, all are fine establishments.

Perhaps the other references are in regard to being in Simpson Bay and not the entire Dutch side?

Georgia,

I'm going to chime in on this one also. I believe there are many restaurants older than the two you've cited.

We've been going to Marks since the 80's as well as Pasanggrahan Restaurant and definitely Antoine's and these are but a few that would be well over the 22 year mark. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" />

Our first visit to SXM was in 1993. Stayed at Pelican and would bet that it was there then. We drove by it often enough. Can't believe that the first time we went there was 2014. Seems like lots of people have made the same mistake!!

OK, I've gotten the explanation from Marty. Annette opened in 1991, and Marty in 1994. They are the first and second oldest restaurants in Simpson Bay (not the entire Dutch side) that are still being operated by the original owners. Others are older, but have changed hands and are not being operated by the original owners. Sorry that I confused things....

No problem and I pretty much assumed that was probably what was intended just based on our personal older knowledge of the island. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/handshake.gif" alt="" />

Pat should know, she's been going so long she might have greeted the original settlers. <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/jester.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/jester.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/jester.gif" alt="" />

Although I have German blood I was never brought up in the culture or exposed to the food. We went to Bavaria for the very first time last Friday. (Wild Bill, Pat, Queen Sharon and another couple) We had delicious food!! I had never had Vienna Schnitzel before but absolutely loved it! Of course I couldn't eat it all so packed up and froze my leftovers to enjoy while on Anguilla. Would definitely recommend going there!

We have been going to SXM since the early 80's and know less about the restaurants than most.
We finally went to Bavarian last year and really enjoyed their food and the casual atmosphere.
Our plan was to go back this April, but didn't stay long enough....
Definitely be back in November!!! <img src="http://www.traveltalkonline.com/forums/images/graemlins/Grin.gif" alt="" />

We have been eating at Bavaria once per trip since the mid 90's. It's always very good and a meal we look forward to. For some reason, we can never remember which day(s) of the week they close. Does anyone know?

I don't know when they are closed only that the night to go is when they do their sausage night which is Friday. We had friends that got us to go for the first time. Excellent food! Tanja is a wonderful bartender!

Great place, we've known Annette and Johnnie for longer than I can remember. And, there's usually a fun group of folks at the bar willing to share captivating stories of life on the island.

Off topic but...20 years ago (or so) there was a place on the hill overlooking Orient Beach that served great German food. Don't remember the name, but it's long gone now.

Actually, it's still there, just doesn't serve German food any more! It's called Paradise View now and they have crepes there now. We went there a few times years ago when they had German food and really enjoyed it.
