Food Center is close and a good grocery store. Mo's is in Red Hook is very good with a great meat selection.

Depending on how much provisioning, you can dinghy to Food Center. The is a dock literally across the street. The walk is an uphill 1/2 mile, very hot. We have walked there and taxi'd back.

The baggers from Food Center will push the carts over to the dinghy dock/Independent Boat Yard for a tip. From Compass Point you will need a taxi.

Go to Red Hook and take a slip at American Yacht Harbor. Compass Point is a long walk or a confusing dinghy ride to food center. They may or may not even have a transient slip available.

Red Hook has Moe's right across the street a half dozen bars and restaurants and easy access by cab from the airport for your crew.

Rick,

It sounds like Independent Boat Yard may be the best place. Not a lot of provisions, but will probably be a few cases of beverages .

Have done American Yacht Harbor and was over $200 for the night. If not taking a slip, they were going to charge me just to pick up passengers, even with fuel/water purchase.

I don't think Compass Pt or Independent boat yard are transient. I had my boat at Compass Pt for 2 years. The marina is generally sold out. Compass Pt is not very responsive to VHF or telephone. Rick and Jay will know more about Independent.

For My money if all your doing is picking up and buying some odds and ends. I would come down to Water Island/Honeymoon Beach. Dinghy into Crown Bay to pick up your people and the provisions. Pueblo is across the street and Gourmet Gallery is in the Marina. Live music and beach bars on Sunday while you are waiting on your crew and a great sunset. There are worse ways to spend a Sunday. It is also a shorter cheaper cab ride as Crown Bay is five minutes from the airport.

Where would you have taxi drop passengers off? Crown Bay Marina? Other?

Sounds like a good plan: Get there early and enjoy beach.

Crown Bay Marina. It is about a ten minute dinghy ride from the Beach

CaptainJay,

We've been planning to do exactly as you recommended but Active Captain reviews make it sound like anchoring in HOneymoon is very difficult due to fouled bottom. Any more local knowledge you can supply to help us first timers? Thanks

Honeymoon can be tough and it is weather dependent. The inside area which is 10 feet deep and mainly sand is normally full. This leaves anchoring on the outer fringes in 25 to 30 feet of water. The fouled areas listed in Active Captain are off either point of the bay. There is a lot of rock and broken coral rubble just off either point.

In the winter or in unsettled weather anchoring out can be uncomfortable. This time of year it is normally fine. As a bailout Lindbergh Bay is straight across. So if you get there and are uncomfortable with the room you can easily move over there. Also Brewer's Bay behind the airport is a short trip. There is also room to anchor in Elephant Bay between St Thomas and Water Island. This is a large private mooring field but there is still room in a few places to anchor. This also will likely be in 25 to 30 feet of water. So make sure you have the chain for that.

Jay

When we stay at the Emerald Beach or Island Beachcomber I'm always surprised at how few boats are anchored there in Lindbergh Bay. It seems like such a nice calm spot.

My $0.02

Honeymoon is beautiful, but it has been "found."

Even in the off-season it's usually full of boats.

If you can find a spot it can be a fun day... the beach is nice, small to no waves, and often entertainment, food, and drinks can be had.
