No ferries that I've ever heard of from SXM but I think either Winair or Liat has regular flights to Statia. If you go, please share personal thoughts and details. It's a place I've always wanted to try and yet, for some reason, year after year we never quite get around to it. I guess, considering it took us twenty plus years to hit Saba for the first time, we're pretty much right on target for a trip to Statia any year now.

We sailed to Statia last year (from Leverick Bay!), a very rolly anchorage, but the island was a wonderful treat - so much history. Walking around the waterfront, you could almost hear the cannons thunder. Very friendly place.

My wife and I and another couple went to Statia for a week in 1986 of scuba diving. At the time there was only one hotel and one dive operation. It was the very first country to recognize the newly independent country of the United States. As a result the British were not pleased and bombarded the country quite hard. Anyway, we were the only tourists on the island and most of the islanders were aware of us. They were holding the Miss teenage Statia contest and we were asked to be judges since we didn't know any of the contestants.
Anyway, to make a short story long, the people of the island were super friendly. For example, the 4 of us climbed to the rim of the Quill, the extinct volcano on the island, and when we got back to the bottom an islander not only gave us a ride back to our hotel but waited several minutes for the last of us to reach the bottom. He refused any offer of compensation, not even an offer of a big ice cream treat. It's a very historic island and even has a Jewish cemetery with Ladino writing on the tombstones.

Wow! Once again, we have to put this into our itinerary on a near future trip.

Thanks for sharing, weeks, and what a great experience to have under your belt - the quill and the beauty pageant, for sure, but most specifically, the hospital of the people of Statia.

St. Eustatias is great place to spend a day! Black sand beaches, lots of ocean glass due to it being a huge port in the 1700's, visit the museum, the place where Statia first saluted by cannon recognizing the US as a country (the first ever) and visit the old Gin Factory. WinAir flys there cheap. A good experience.
