This portion of the trip report describes several restaurants that were chose for value. A requirement is reasonable cost and excellent food and service. Two restaurants were panned for failing to meet those objectives. It is not meant to be an all inclusive listing of restaurants.

Poulet d’Orleans:
For French-Creole food it is hard to beat Poulet d’Orleans. This restaurant is located in a hundred year old house located on the hill on the Northern edge of Orleans. The chef has worked in numerous major restaurants in New York and was selected to cook for Presidents Bush and Mitterand when the held a summit meeting in SXM a few years ago. The food ranges from chicken to seafood. The chicken is baked and prepared with the chef’s own Creole sauce which is magnificent. Fish offerings vary, but during our stay it was Mahi-Mahi. Dinners are served with about ten vegetables. Desserts are fantastic and are generally better than the fancier restaurants in Grand Case. Service is excellent. Meals are about $12-15 and desserts $6.00. This restaurant offers superior value at very modest prices.

Peg Leg Pub:
We were finally able to locate this restaurant after failing last December. There is a small banner out by t he street, but the easiest way to find it is to find the small shopping area in Simpson Bay that houses the Dominos Pizza and Scoops Ice Cream. You may sit outside on the waterfront or in the air-conditioned building. On some nights there is live music. There are many appetizers, sandwiches and full dinners to choose from. Prices are low to modest. As an example a New York Strip Steak or Filet (10oz) is only $19. The beef is of the finest quality. We had the Strip Steak with pepper sauce - excellent. On another day we had the Mango Chicken, again excellent. Service was superb. My only complaint would be their mixed vegetables, carrots, squash and zucchini. I love carrots but the squash and zucchini are not what I would choose given a choice, however, the taste of these was the best I have tasted. On one occasion, we splurged (calorie wise) and had the Key Lime Pie. Again excellent. The restaurant is decorated with nautical paraphernalia and t-shirts and hats collected from previous patrons. For those interested there is generally a spirited game of darts and there are regular tournaments. The owner, Neil Rooney, is the former owner of the Sunset Beach Bar.

Baywatch:
For a beachfront restaurant we finally went to Baywatch on Orient Beach. While this place has been open for a number of years, we had not gone there until this trip. We have been missing a great restaurant. Prices are modest especially considering the location. As examples, my favorites were the chicken Parmigan and the Philly cheese steak at $8.95. They are large sandwiches and delicious. Their hamburgers are best on the island. They also have appetizers and some meals. Service is fast and attentive. (Note: no credit cards)

New York Chinese Restaurant.:
This restaurant in Simpson Bay is across the side street from Pizza Hut. Although it is not impressive from the outside, it is clean, air-conditioned and has wonderful Chinese, Dutch and Spanish food. Prices are inexpensive. Examples: ½ chicken served Spanish style (tomato based sauce and vegetables-but not spicy) is $6.00. Peppered Beef is $10 as is Red Chicken and most other Chinese dishes. The egg rolls are world class! Portions are huge and you can chose between rice or potatoes as your side dish.

Mark’s Place (in the Old Food Center Bush Road parking lot):
This restaurant has great food, generous portions and reasonable prices. Food is American, Italian and local. Wednesday evenings one of their specials is Prime Rib for $22, it is huge.

Papagallos at Club O.
We cannot recommend this restaurant. On our last visits, the new food service manage, Jack, was making a good attempt to make some long over due changes. While he was succeeding in improving service and food quality, he continued the old menu. Jack has now been replaced with a new Food Service manager and frankly the changes have been reversed. Service is extremely slow, especially at breakfast. It took us more than an hour one morning to get a simple breakfast omelet due to an inattentive waitress who was more interested in working a crossword puzzle than she was waiting on here customers. Tips must be paid in cash, but credit cards are accepted for food and to set up restaurant accounts. This place needs a complete overhaul of menu and service. Very loud entertainment several times per week.

Turtle Pier Bar & Restaurant (Airport Blvd):
What can I say? Poor service, mediocre food and tip is added to the bill, probably because with the current service level, no one would leave one.

Texas Pit BBQ. (Union Road):
This is an inexpensive ribs/beef and chicken BBQ located near the Cole Bay Ram’s Market (opening soon). Live entertainment on some evenings. One of, if not the best, BBQs in the West Indies.
